Is this trouble for my Alusils?
I did not want to separate the p\c's to replace Delavar studs. But the piston pins are very stubborn and left me no choice. so far I'm contemplating trying to replace 12 studs with 3 p\c still attached and 3 p/c removed. (1 broken stud below cylinder) Now I disturbed the rings on at least 2 p/c and to say the least a little confused.
Any input would be greatly appreciated. Yes they are Alusils and being re-used. Thanks, Leakproof. ![]()

I don't think you will have any problem arise from re-using the pistons and cylinders. I strive to return the rings to the same position (clock position) that they came from and of course on the same pistons in the same cylinders. Since you have some separated already you should measure them for wear. This rings can be removed from the pistons and inserted into the cylinders to measure end gap. The ring lands can be measured with a feeler guage. The piston clearance can be measured with a feeler guage between the piston and cylinder.
In the past I've found that my used rings had less end gap than brand new rings. With your used rings the wear limit for the ring lands is .006 inches. If you are re-ringing you must not have more than .004 inches. Wear limit for piston to cylinder is .004 inches and is measured on the skirt. -Andy

But basically there is nothing you can do with the alucils. You already said youre going to use them again. The pistons dont rering well so I ve had great success with just reusing them as they are, just cleaning the ring lands of carbon.
If the studs are pulling with lots of resistance, use at least a propane torch to warm the area up, makes them easier to remove, you dont want to break them especially at the case level.. Bruce |

Thanks guys thats exactly the answers I was hoping for. I will be defiantly checking spec and tidying up things. To my un-trained eye the compression rings at first glance look like new. I was wondering about setting the rings back to there proper orientation. Thanks for answering that Andy. On piston#5 the rings all pretty much line up the wrong way. (not where there supposed to be) Re-ringing sounds good to as an option. 109.893 on the clock, some would say the rings are just breaking in. Thinking of purchasing a impact drill and Snap On stud removal tool. Is it a smart idea to remove 6 head studs with p/c's still on?
Do I have to replace the copper cylinder gasket for any reason? Bruce I see you already answered that on my other post. Thankyou. I guess my main concern was seperating any more p/c's then necessary. I do not mind doing it I just don't want to make things worse by disturbing more then I need to. Thanks, Leakproof.

The rings will move around and orient themselves regardless to how you place them. I always place them at 120 degrees but never see them like that when I open the engine.

In cases where the rings all line up, I turn the second ring 180 degrees away from the top ring and call it good. Like Bruce said they will move around anyway.

If you are having trouble removing the wrist pins (I have) I made a tool that was a bar with a slight hook welded and ground on one end, and a thread for a nut/slider bar on the other. It wont take a lot, but it was enough. Make the bar/hook diameter just enough to slide thru the pin- so you dont have much sloop/leeway.

I was in the same boat as you, initially did not want to separate pistons and cylinders. Ended up re-ringing the alusils, and my engine has been running strong for 10,000 miles now. In hindsight, I could have used a heat torch to remove the wrist pins. Had same mileage as yours.
