Damaged Case what to do??

I have a 3.6 motor from a 98 993 which took a hit from the side, the case sustained some damage the flywheel sensor mount broke off, the rest of the case is OK, but I don't have the piece that broke off.

Now my problem is that I want to run efi and i can't use the flywheel sensor for RPM's, this means that I would have to go with carbys or find another way to count rpms for my efi.

I'd rather not have to purchase another case. Advice appreciated

Matt,

You can use an EFI crank position sensor and a special rear pulley to do the job. Clewett can fix you up.

I have just been through this with a damaged 964 case.
It had a crack at one of the gearbox studs - looked like the engine was dropped by PO on the stud (which was badly bent).
I got it welded up by Head Exchange in Perth. They vee'd out the crack and welded it up, then installed a thread insert - looks like new. Worth a try at $150, compared to $000's for another case.
I am sure there are similar shops over your way that specialise in alloy welding. I used Head Exchange because they were already doing my guides and they are regularly welding up alloy heads.

If you know what the missing piece looks like, I would fab a new part in aluminium and get it welded on. It isn't a structural piece so you shouldn't have any issues.
Be aware that the cases have some magnesium content, so they are not easy to weld.

I noticed he has a cam sensor what is that exactly used for?

Another question, if someone has seen this done, I was told if I used carbys and did not need a sensor on the flywheel I can just bolt on a 3.0 9 bolt flywheel to mate up to my 915. Is this correct or must I invest in a conversion flywheel.

Cam position sensors are used in sequential FI systems so the ECU knows which injector tor fire,...

For carbs or MFI, we use a 9-bolt flywheel or its alloy equivalent. You'll need the right clutch package to use with the 915.
