help with connecting rod specs 3.6

Hey all:

I have a 964 in need of rebuilding and happen to have a 993 3.8rs kit. I can't find the specs to on the connecting rods and wrist pin specs for compatibility. The 964 rod (wrist pin side) has a width of .1173 wide and the piston is .0923 wide. do these numbers sound right to those in the know?

So overall my question is (if I remember) do I need to find 993 connecting rods to make this work or do I have to have the 964 rods machined thinner. If machined thinner, what should the tolerances be?

Thanks

Call Andial for a new set of Carrillo rods. They have them in stock with the 964 big end and 993 small end. The reason they do this is because most 964 owners use 993 P+C's during overhaul like you did.

964 and 993 conrods are not interchangeable. For one thing the 993 big end width is 18.9mm vs 21.9mm for 964

Ok, I pulled a stock p & C combo on the 964 motor and the rod (at wrist pin) measures .0972 (with bushing still installed) and the exposed wrist pin measures .1137. That means, stock, the gap is .0165 total, or .00825 on each end of the rod.

The piston I have to install, the wrist pin gap is .0965, so deducting the same .0165 gap, I need a rod that is .080 wide (including the busing).

Sound right?

also can you confirm that rod length is 127mm and what is the difference in size on the 964 vs the 993 crank. I thought it was 2.00 for the 993 and 2.13 for the 964, but now I'm not sure

Thanks!

I don't know what the deal is w/ 993 rods, the full specs aren't published in any of the resources I have.

964 rods are identical to 3.2 Carrera and 3.3 turbo
length 127.00-.05mm
small end width 25-.5mm
big end width 21.7+.1
big end diam. 58+.019mm
small end diam 23.020+.013
play between the bush & pin 0.020...0.039 max 0.055mm

Rod nut torque

Is the torque for 993 rods nuts and bolts the same as for late 964 rods. 11ft lb and then two 90 degree turns in stages.
Thanks
