Best Way to Compress the Chain Tensioner

I have searched the forum but there does not seem to be much on this topic other than to use a C clamp. Wayne's book does not cover it and the Bentley manual suggests Channelock pliers and a 3 mm pin. What is the best way to accomplish this task? The engine is from a 1987 Carrera.

I put the tensioner in a vise and slowly turn it down. Once its bled, put an allen in it to hold it collapsed pin.

What about while it is still installed in the engine?

Pipe wrench, a big one, compress slowly.
Once it is compressed, remove at once.

When it is in the engine, just pull it out. Don't worry about compressing it at that point.

Then you can use a vise or other methods to compress it, stick a nail (long term) or allen or other small tool in the hole if you are about to put it back in.
