poping from left side chain case !! what the heck
just got finished resealing a 2.7 for a friend of mine and set up the cam timing using the mechanical adjusters to set timing, not my first motor build but something is not right. after setting the cam timing i spun the motor around double and triple checking my timing before installing the pressure fed tensioners, after this i assembled the rest of the motor and and before i buttoned up the valve covers i double checked the valve adjust, while turning the motor over slowly i now get a distinct click from the left timing cover area. this only happens when turning the motor over very slowly. if i turn it with any speed with a 3/8 ratchet clockwise of course it makes no noise and is smooth. but if i turn it very slowly i get a random pop or click from the left side only. the gears are all in line the chains and sprockets are the ones that where in there and on the same side turning the same direction no change was done there. cams are torqued and cam thrust plates and washers are all in there place. so im gonna tear that side back apart and see whats going on in there. i was thinking maybe it was the tensioners causing it as it was not popping with the manual adjustable tensioners in there, i did have them a bit tighter than the pressure fed one are holding it now with no oil to them. the spacer is installed with the tensioner pulley and was free to float just a bit so im thinking maybe the idler wheel is making the noise as there is not much else that is free to move. anyways just thought maybe someone has run into this.

The same thing happened to me and it was the idler arm not aligning with the chain as it floats. It will line up on its own but pulling the cover just to be sure never hurts.

Are the cam gears on correct? Left side dish out, right side dish in?

yes the gears are correctly installed and even on the same cams and side they started on. the idler float has to be it, as even with the spacers that where in there there is room for the idler slide on its shaft just a bit side to side. i checked the idlers for bushing "bearing" wear before installation and they spun smooth with no defects i could see. i was thinking maybe because the chains are dry no oil on them that idler gear is creeping up the side of the chain just a bit with the metal to metal contact. i know this is all speculation till i get it apart. thanks for the replies any in site always helps cheers ed

I would be looking at the math of the chain alignment to intermediate shaft.

i would suspect it's just the normal lumping you get as the rockers slide off the cam lobes, acting on a not quite pumped up hydraulic tensioner. maybe. is the chain all the way on the intermediate sprocket, not 1/2 way on?

There probably isn't much lube on the sprocket either at this time to shed the chain at slow speeds which couples with Johns diagnosis on the tensioner.

i think your probably dead on as far as the no pressure to the tensioner. it is on the chain and in both groves or sections as needed. thanks for the response and i think ill pull the temp sensor and squirt a bit of motor oil in there and see what difference it makes before i tear it apart. ive been busy taking my coast gaurd 100ton. masters test the last few weeks so havent had much free time. cheers ed Quote:
