engine mount torque value
Hello Everyone,
I am putting the factory style engine mount back on my engine going in my 914/6.Does anyone know the proper torque? I did some searches on the web, asked on the 914 boards and looked in the factory manuals and could not come up with the factory recommended torque. Any help is greatly appreciated! John |

Perhaps someone will help you, but I've never bothered with a torque wrench for this, and I've had these nuts off and back on many many times. Never had a problem, either. It is a 10mm stud, and usually a 17mm nut, so any 17mm box end wrench tugged upon hard will give you enough so nothing will come loose. And unless you are an ape, you won't overtorque anything. For that matter, you can use a normal length 3/8" ratchet. Think about it - you won't be able to torque the upper right nut anyway (unless, of course, you cut a nice hole opposite it on the mount so you can use a socket and extension). |

Are you referring to the engine crossbar which hangs the engine in the chassis, or the engine console that mounts on the engine itself? Whatever the case, Walt's suggestion is spot-on.
If you really want a number, I found a tech tip in the 74-89 911 Parts Reference years ago that says slight misalignment of the engine and transmission can transfer more noise into the car. They suggest the crossbar should loosened at the console, then tightened to 40 Nm/29 ft-lbs. The console itself can be attached to the engine at that same torque setting for a typical mild strength M10 fastener which is 40 Nm/29 ft-lb. Here's a nice chart to use when you're not sure http://www.metricmcc.com/catalog/Ch10/10-1027.pdf

Walt,
Thank you for the response. I was looking for the console to engine torque value,I found it funny that it was not listed in the factory manuals, guess now I know why! I will follow your advice. Ktl Thank you for taking the time to answer and post that link. I checked it out and it is indeed going to get added to my "favorites" section. I also want to take time to publicly thank Grady Clay for the time he took answering a question that I know took some time to research. The forum Wayne has provided and the number of experienced people who have quite literally "done it all", make this forum a wealth of information and wisdom. Thank You All, John |
