What to build ?

I recently acquired a '71 911T roller project car that I am going to build into a lightweight hotrod.

The plan is to make it as light as I can, full tilt suspension, light interior in order to have an ultimate street legal hotrod.

I will plan on tracking it, but I will also drive it on the street.

I am a masochist. My last hotrod (that I seriously regret selling) was a '69 911S with full race suspension and a Supertec built 2.6L that was probably good for 220hp or so. That car weighed 2050lb with 1/2 tank of gas. It was a filling rattler on the street and I loved it.

Now I want 1900lb and 275hp.

The car will see track duty, but its DE and Track Days not full on racing. I am really leaning toward a Mag case engine, 2.8SS maybe and a built 901 tranny with LSD. Or, would I be better off from a torque standpoint to build a longer stroke 2.8 or 2.7?

I love MFI. I want MFI. But what MFI parts do I need to search out? Mag stacks? Plastic stacks? I assume whatever I buy will need lots of reworking, should I just buy parts already re-worked from Henry at Supertec?

The car came with a 2.2T engine that is locked up, I have no idea of the condition internally though I plan to disassemble it soon and see. Perhaps the 66mm crank is good? Is a T crank good for hotrodding? I thought the T cranks were not counterweighted or not nitrided or something like that?

I also have a '72 911T engine that someone put '73 CIS on at some point. It was a runner when removed from a different car. It is not a 7R case.

So... if I want a Mag case MFI engine and my target is 275hp or so, whats the best way to go? Is the cost difference between 275hp and 250 or so massive? What RPM would this thing spin too? 7500 or so?

I would like to assemble the engine myself but I would also like to buy parts from a shop that would be willing to offer tips and help, plus of course rely on the help from this forum.

Thanks for any and all input!

So you have to ask yourself what you 'want' and what can your wallet handle...

Building 275 on an early platform is very doable, it will just be expensive and will need to spin.

I wanted a 'bleeding edge' motor for the street... so early Al case, 2.8L, 11:1 CR, Ti this, Ti that, blah, blah, blah. I've got about 18k in parts. Head work was 5k alone but they should be amazing. I've already accepted the fact that it will get 'mantience builds' just as if it was a race motor. Whats a few hundered and my time compared to the original materials cost??

Going to a more modern 3.6 is going to give you something cheaper, longer lasting and more driveable... if that is what your looking for. It wasn't for me.

The early T cranks are lacking counter weights. They can be run to 7.5k. Your bearings will just need replacement sooner... They do spin up nice. With a light weight set of rods and reground to GT3 journals it could be awesome.

No 3.6 or bigger / heavier engine. The car will stay narrow body and thus weight is a factor.

Budget.... Hmmmmmmmm that is the question. If I ended up with $20K in it all said and done I could probably live with that. Like you, I also could live with going through it for "freshening" every 3-4 years.... sure beats having it die the hard way.

My last engine, the 2.6L Supertec MFI beast, lived a hard life. 4+ years of LOTS of track days. At one point I swapped gearboxes and the new short 5th gear had me all over the MSD 7K rpm rev limiter, so I removed it and spun it to 7500rpm. Engine had qualms about that and in all the MANY MANY miles of very hard track use it never gave me a single issue. Did not use oil.... did not smoke... fired up immediatly every time..... basically ran like a swiss watch.

I want that, but more power. Always more power....
