hotrod 356 or Type IV engine rebuild forum?
I know this section of the forum is dedicated to 911 engine rebuilds. Does anyone have a recommendation for a forum that covers hotrod 356 or Type IV rebuilds? I'm looking for recommended machine shops, rebuild shops, build threads, etc.. Something like what we have here, except for 356's and 914's.
TIA |

Jake Raby has a site, Welcome to Raby's Aircooled Technology Web Site , that includes 356's and 914's.

You probably will not find a hot rod 356 forum specifically.
Do you have specific questions, or just want to lurk? |

Thanks guys. I'm definitely lurking at the moment. I'm trying to get up to speed on the different Type IV configurations, cooling requirements, etc.. before buying parts or starting machine work on cores. I have a 356 and a 914 that are both in the rust repair stages right now. Both will need engines. I have the original motor for the 356 and it's in good shape, but I'm going to build something bigger for the car.

I talked with these folks today:
Fat Performance | High Performance Racing Engines European Motorworks | Parts for VW Type 4 Engines and other Auto Parts and I'd talked with the guy at Jake's last week: Welcome to Raby's Aircooled Technology Web Site If Wayne & crew are okay with it, I will continue to document the machine work and rebuild here. I know this is a 911 engine forum, so if this is not okay, I will post on the 356/914 forums. Otherwise, I will keep you all in the loop. |

Shuie,
The type 4 motor is a touchy beast, great fun to a point, expensive and temperamental just beyond that point. The big pistons and cylinders will run the head out of flow at a relatively low RPM. The good news RPM cost money. If you limit this big motor to about 6000 RPM and can be happy at 160 HP. The heads can be ported (and should be a little) to help things out a bit, the exhaust side is weak at best. Pauter makes a nice set of high ratio rockers that can help a bit too. If you just have to go past 6000 RPM now you need to look better springs etc etc. If you want to know what happens beyond this point it cost money, this lesson I learned well. My car still has a track record or too.

Jake Raby posts here on occasion, but usually only in the 356, 914 or 912 forums. So if you want his direct input I would put a thread in one of those forums. He also posts a bunch on 914world.com
If I had kept my 912e, it would have gotten a Raby Type IV build on it. He does neat stuff with those engines.
