How difficult was your Top end rebuild, I'm thinking about diving in. Newbie as well.

Me too, the only fear I have is valve and cam timing, the rest seems pretty straight forward.

Hi guys,

If you have some mechanic experience, top end rebuild is not that difficult. all you need is the right tools and good machine shop. I have the lift so it makes my life easy, I have bought the engine stand, some Allen wrenches ( long for exhaust nuts), seals pressing tools, cam tool, "z" holder, some short swivel sockets etc.
After engine removal i had a lot of cleaning, my engine was leaking oil from the thermostat, you can imagine, everything was cover in oil and dirt, lots of hours of cleaning. Be patient when removing exhaust nuts, soak them good in penetrating fluid, if that don't help, heat... Make sure you photograph every step, this will make your life easy later, pay attention to details. I had my heads redone by machine shop in Jersey, very nice guys. They bead clean them, shave valves, seats, supply and pressed new guides, when i got them back, they where ready to install. My advice is to get Wayne's book "How to rebuild and modify Porsche 911 engine", you will get idea how to get the job done. As far of cam timing i was afraid too but when you start doing and understand the process is actually pretty easy, if you will not understand from the book how is done, search the web, forums on Pelican will help or there are some good videos on you tube explaining how the cam timing is done. get all the gaskets and seals in advance so you don't get stuck for a few days, ask me how i know... well, good luck !!! you can do it !!!
