crazy valve noise 3.2

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum and i need help, please. Last year a got my first Porsche, 87 carrera 3.2. Last winter i took the engine out and i did top end rebuild. i did everything myself but of course i use the machine shop for the valves and guides.
I put the engine back, got oil leaks and walking shafts. tight everything back, still had the leaks, i installed the shafts seals and no more leaks, finally. Because of that i adjust the valves 3 times and still have weird valve noise. this noise is driving me crazy, this is my first Porsche and I'm not use to the sound, this is a metallic sound that is horrible. i have installed brand new SS heat exchangers stock configuration, brand new cat and brand new Dansk muffler. Is it possible that the sound is louder than before because of the SS heat exchangers ?

Anything will help !!! you guys got much more experience than me.

P.S. I have the sound recorded but for some reason the atachment doesn't work, i will keep trying so you can hear the engine running.

Could be bad timing chain tensioners. If so, then major damage could result from running the car anymore.

i tried to listen with the stethoscope and i don't hear anything loud from the timing chain covers, the noise is a ticking noise. It is loud when the engine is cold, gets less noticeable when the engine warms up or when i increase rpm. i can hear it more on the right side. i wish that the attachment option will work so you could listen. i have read that if the chain tensioner collapse the noise is more like grinding noise, this is more ticking...maybe I'm wrong, i can always open the covers and check how the tensioner feel.

if someone will tell me how to attach the sound that will be great, when i try to click on the attachment tab nothing happen, i will love for somebody to listen to the engine sound. Arek

all gaskets and parts are new, unless i didn't torque enough....i will start the car tomorrow and pay special attention to any exhaust leaks. let you know more tomorrow thanks

+1, rtv on the gaskets works a treat, I had the same noise when I installed my headers, they were all torqued correctly too.

Sounds like you have a bad miss in it. Does not sound like a rocker to me, more like something is scraping on something?

Did you put the cam chain gears on right? One is dished and the other if flat?

I'm going to remove chain covers and and see, yes it is like kinda ticking-scraping noise. when i put everything together i did follow my pictures, i have photographed every step, i did this late at night, maybe i missed something....thanks

To me it sounds like the head is leaking at the cylinder.

Hi guys,

i just got home, went to my garage, started the car with my hands near exhaust. Max was right !!! i have a leak on the 5th cylinder between the head and the heat exchanger.... I'm wondering if torquing will do the job or i should go for new gaskets again. I'm not a fan of any sealer in this spot, i will add it last.

thanks again, i try to torque it tomorrow and let you know if the sound disappears.

The torque on the studs is 15#ft then a 90 degree swing. Did you change out the dilivar studs?

yes all the studs are new, i think the problem is that i use a cheap torque wrench, just got a snap on, tomorrow i will re-check everything.....thanks Arek

90 degrees is still 90 degrees weather there is inital torque or not...You built it so you know what you did.

yes i know what i did and i didn't like it, i didn't do 90 degrees and it felt like stuff wasn't tight enough. some bolts i tighten by feel because i didn't trust my crappy wrench but i worked on Porsche engine for the first time and i was afraid to screw something up overtightened. i think for the first time i didn't do such a bad job.

It is not uncommon for header flanges to not be level. A glass/granite/etc. plate and sandpaper can help show any waviness, just like with flatening cam towers.

When the tubes heat up (or are welded) they can move around as well.

Just be thankful you do not have any broken headstuds causing a leak between cylinder and head.

Bruce, it sounds like you are giving him the torque for the head studs, and he is looking for the torque for the exhaust studs. Are they the same?

Hi guys,

Yes, the exhaust nuts where loose, per Wayne's book the torque for them is 18.4 ft-lbs. and they should be re-tighten (when cold) after first drive which i didn't do.
well, the annoying sound is gone !!! thanks so much for help !!!
