Supertec Head Studs

On my latest rebuild, I decided to use Supertec head studs.

These came packaged nicely and contained complete instructions and materials to do the job. The bundled instructions direct the user to use blue locktite on the case side (included) and anti-seize on the nut end of the studs (also included).

To my surprise, the head end of the studs are a different thread pitch than the case ends. The head nuts (included) do fit on the head end of the studs.

My surprise was that there is a difference in threads on each end of the studs, and that a specific end fits into the engine case.

Looks like I need a new collet for my stud remover tool. (the kit did include (2) yellow nuts to use to insert the studs into the case.)

The head end of the stud has finer threads for more accurate torquing. No need for a new collet as the double nuts work fine. There is no depth measurement either, just screw them in until they bottom and you're done. The head end nut is open so you don't need to worry about running out of depth with a barrel nut. You chose wisely.

Course thread in an aluminum housing and fine thread on the nut to be torqued is precisely the innovation that you purchased with the Supertec stud. This system is used throughout the high performance stud applications in aerospace and auto racing alike.
Companies like Cosworth, Hewland, Ferrari, BMW and Renault in F1 and Alison, Lycoming and Continental and even as for back as the Rolls-Royce Merlin have used this principle to enhance clamping consistency. Of course there are more but these are just the ones I've seen.

The studs like all of our products carry a satisfaction guarantee so if this innovation just doesn't suit your sensibilities please return them for a full refund.
Cheers

Please understand, I am NOT unsatisfied. I am not arguing. I tried not to convey any negativity. On the contrary, I am merely stating what I found. Nothing bad, but I simply did not understand prior to purchasing.

With any luck, this should help educate what the Supertec head studs are. I was impressed that there were no reported failures with these (which is one of the consideraions when choosing these for this rebuild).

When cleaning the studs prior to installation, it was intuitive which end should be facing outward as they are tapered in order to start the nut easier. I did get a little confused when my collet did not spin onto the fine threads, but then I figured out why in short order.

I am impressed that all the materials were INCLUDED in the kit rather than simply referred to (like in another supplier).

I have used another supplier and was familiar with their product, but I thought I would give these Supertec studs a chance. I see really nice things that are posted here by Henry.
