chain tensioner mounting shaft repair
Has anyone had the shafts that mount the chain tensioner in the housings replaced or repaired?
My shafts have some gauling and damage from where the tensioner idler arms rides on it and rather than replace the entire chain housing unit I would like to know if anyone has had success in repairing the shafts alone. They are pressed into the die cast housing, but can they be pressed out and remachined or replaced with new units and who would do this type of repair? I can send them to any good machine shop that has handled this before along with the idler arms that would need to be modified and rebushed. As a follow up question: Can anyone recommend a shop that would weld on a thick washer to the idler arm to replicate the later style arms that had additional material (a boss) added to prevent shaft gauling and premature tensioner failure. I dont want to buy newer style arms when I can get my current old style modified and rebushed. Thanks, Fred

A search of this site using the search mechanism ought to turn up something helpful. I think you will find you need a machine shop to make a new one and install it. As to welding something on, fuggedaboudit. Go to Henry Schmidt's website - try Supertec (if you can't find Henry, you aren't trying hard enough) and look up the tensioner upgrade he does - he presses out your old bushings, and it looks like he pushes in a new, longer, one. Does exactly what you are looking for. Will cost you, but less than buying the newer part I am pretty sure. And will work. |

Vapors in the referenced great discussion is a man after my own heart - using a drill press as a fairly high precision lathe!

I agree- send your old idler arms out to Henry to be rebushed. $285 or whatever his price is right now is a great deal for not only the work performed, but also his contribution to the forum- invaluable.
cgarr here on the forums can do new tensioner support shafts for you He did two sets for me this winter. Removes old shafts, installs new O1 shafts ground to fit. Epoxies the bores (and the chain ramp support locations) with new goop.

Just wanted to post an update.
Craig (Cgarr) did a great job on replacing my idler arm shafts and cleaning up my chain boxes. He turned it around quickley and even repaired the damage Fedex did to my thermo sensor in the left side chain box. thanks, Fred

Our new idler arm design is less susceptible to galling and will perform flawlessly on a marginal shaft.
