Any alternatives to the $1000 '87-'89 G50 Sachs clutch kit?
Planning to drop my engine for some performance mods and was checking out my options for clutch kits as a "while you're in there" project.
The original Sachs kit is just under $1000 here on Pelican! Are the clutch linings made of titanium or something? ![]() Are there any other good options on the market, or is Sachs the only game in town? I heard that 911 Turbo clutch kits will interchange...true? Thanks for any help, |

You will want to use the spring center disc. the correct presure plate, and fly wheel. Make sure the g50 up date has been done.

Yep...mine had its clutch replaced around 65,000 miles, at which point the G50 update was done. The car has 140,000+ miles on it now. The spring-centered kit is still $950. Nobody else makes a clutch kit for these? Hate to be a cheapskate, but this seems to be a ridiculous price for a common wear item.

Thanks for the alternative, but that one costs $1200! Is this the going rate of clutches these days? I replaced one in my old 944 Turbo (with about the same HP going through it) for $200 about 10 years ago.

clutch kits for these cars are indeed not cheap and you're right the options are limited due to the exclusivity of the 87-89 G50, on top of it being a Porsche and thus subject to the "Porsche tax." Be it Spec, Centerforce, OE Sachs, or whoever, you're going to pay a good buck for a complete kit. So if you can get away with reusing your clutch housing, by all means do it.
For that kind of money, i'd heed Henry's advice and look into a Kennedy LW clutch housing. The OE clutch housing is mega heavy and the savings in weight is more in the clutch housing than the flywheel. I've got one (to be installed soon) and I can tell you it's a substantial savings in weight. The downside is the weight loss can affect idle stability and possibly cause stalling on abrupt throttle closure. The surefire way to avoid the stalling is to have a ECU chip that acknowledges the presence of the light clutch housing For a complete performance clutch overhaul in street & light track form, i'd recommend: Kennedy LW clutch resurfaced flywheel with new pilot bearing spring center disc new release bearing new guide tube (if heavily worn or the old, outdated size) thorough inspection of release fork pivot points- lube as needed You can get crazier if you want with different types of discs but that's more money and not worthwhile if the car is street driven only. Check out Spec's website for more detail www.specclutch.com

I thought I'd seen some reasonably priced alternatives if going with the Turbo option on the G50 but it was a long time ago and I don't recall the details. I'm interested b/c I assume at some point I'm going to have to replace my clutch, which was upgraded to the Turbo.

This is an old thread that I brought up only because I did not see a feature to subscribe from my iPhone, so, sorry I did not mean to bring it back up.
On the other hand, it's been a while since last informational post so if anyone has some good info to share, i'm all ears too.

The only OEM Turbo option for the G50 is the 3.0 930 (1975-1977) clutch disc. The Turbo clutch housing is not a direct interchange for the G50, despite it being the same 240mm size as the G50.
It seems that spring discs have become the norm for the G50 clutch kits. The rubber center discs must have been phased out? Clutchnet.com makes some good stuff. I've used their discs with good success on my racecar. They usually have good winter discounts too. Clutch Kit Package
