964 cams give more mid-range power; one can feel & measure it.
![]() Your chip will need to be remapped of course.

You do not need actual 964 cams. I had my 1979 SC cams re-ground to 964 profile, I assume your Carrera Cams can also be reground. I've also heard that a good header / exhaust will give you the best gains on a Carrera than the chip.

I fitted 964 camshafts to my '88 Carrera 3.2L engine when doing a top-end overhaul. Found a nice set from a reputable eBay seller and paid $450. The cams provide a noticeable performance increase that you can feel...especially above 3800 rpm when the engine really wakes up.
These camshafts have increased duration on both exhaust and intake valve events, plus slightly increased lift. Idle quality is still good, but a little more "lumpy" than the stock 3.2 cams. The only modification required is to remove the power steering extension stub off of the right-hand camshaft, as shown. My local automotive machine shop did this for $5. ![]()

One thing that I forgot to mention is that I have a Steve Wong chip that was installed prior to the camshaft swap. I did not have the chip reprogrammed, and find no reason to, due to the way the engine runs throughout the operational speed/load range. Cold and hot starts are perfect, no signs of running rich anywhere, good throttle response, and nice manners. The only change I notice is fuel mileage - before the cam swap I could get 27 mpg (steady state cruising @ 70 mph) which has now dropped to around 25.5 mpg - not a big hit considering the performance increase.

I had my 1979 911SC cams reground by John Dougherty back in 2009.
John@drcamshafts.com or tel# 530-672-2286. He is in Shingle Springs, Ca. I included a postal money order for full payment and had them back in my hands within a week. I didn't listen to the people complaining about John and he came through. dog |

How much power would one expect from doing this?

Are there any benefits to still reprogramming the chip?? Engine runs great as is. Would a remap improve it even more, give more hp?

Will the cam regrind cause the car to no longer pass the California smog test?

My '87 3.2 with a Steve Wong chip and 964-grind cams easily passed smog last December, even with the infamous "brown wire" disconnected.

I think remapping would be beneficial when changing cams.

I have the Steve Wong chip on my stock 3.2 Carrera which I am about to re do the top end on.
I'm wondering If I used a 964 profile cam and fitted the higher compression euro P&C's would that effectively negate the use of the chip ? I have a dansk Pre muf and Dansk sport muf on the car. It strikes me the only sluggish area would be in the 1-2k RPM range. But would the increased torque make up for it ? |

Are you planning to turn this into a diesel engine? I think most would be happy with only a power issue in the 1-2K rpm range. ![]() From many owner comments, the correct Wong chip will only enhance that which you plan to add. Sherwood |
