Pelican Group Build: 2.2E…Lend a hand!
I think the first book we bought was Wayne’s engine rebuild book…who knew it would take 10 years to really use it!...;-)
The time has come on my son’s ’66 rebuild to get the engine going…and that is where you come in. In my second post (I will update it as we go along), after reading through Wayne’s & Bruce’s books and a kazillion Pelican post, I have listed the hi-lights of a stock 2.2E rebuild with some moderate upgrades. Please fine tune it!! We are looking for any and all inspirational information, from inside tips to machine shops, in order to finish this phase of the project. I know…a 2.2E in a ’66…that is what it came with when I bought the car almost 20 years ago so we are going to build it back stock. The engine is completely torn down and a new set of Mahle 2.2E P&C's are on hand. Your insight will be greatly appreciated!! Best regards, Glenn & Cam |

2.2E Rebuild
Up grades: • Turbo valve covers-YES • Air baffle mod-YES • 3.0 Oil pump?- NO, unnecessary • Oil case squirters?-NO, those pistons were not intended to have that cooling oil jet • Cylinder case-savers-YES, always in a mag case • New rod bolts & hardware-YES Outsourced Machine/Rebuild work: • Rods-Check of course, big ends likely OK, rebush small ends • Crankshaft-Check, hopefully still std • Engine Case-Check, but probably OK unless turkeyed or abused. Line bores are over prescribed on these cases • Heads-described in your valve stiff below • Cams-Send to Elgin for re-grind, along with rockers • Oil Cooler-Clean • MFI pump & hardware, injectors Case: • Cylinder case-savers • Raceware/Supertec cylinder head stud & hardware-Not needed, stock steel studs with biral cylinders are A-OK • crankcase oil bypass modification-YES • Intermediate shaft bearing upgrade?-NO, not needed for 2.2 case • Check main bearing tang location?-???? • Install piston squirters?-NO see above • Check/re-plane cylinder spigots?--Same comments on case above • Case resizing/plane & align bore?--same comments as on case above • Rebore spigots?-NO • Cleaning/media tumble?-NO, media should never touch a case, high pressure hot soap and water works wonders, as does patience and elbow grease Oil Pump: • 3.0 liter oil pump? NO • updated oil pressure relief pistons and springs.-Yes, required with bypass mod Pistons and Cylinders: complete- New Mahle 2.2E pistons, cylinders, pins, clips • Balance-Sweet P/C's, Yes, have entire rotating mass balanced by good machinist Heads: • Three angle grind-YES • completely rebuilt, with all new valves, springs, and valve guides-YES • cc and matched the same-Unlikely to be needed Camshaft:-Let a seriously good cam guy take care of all this • stock “E” cam, inspect for in spec tolerances • magnaflux • polish • harden Timing chain & tensioners: • chain-replace-YES • reuse solid tensioners?-NO, use factory tensioners Balance engine components:-YES • crankshaft • flywheel • pressure plate • pistons/pins • rods Exhaust headers: complete by Jet-Hot-IF cost is no object • cleaned, blasted ceramic coated Muffler:-YES • media blast (ceramic coat/Jet-Hot or paint?) • chrome tip- replace MFI:-YES • test/adjust/rebuild as needed • injectors- test/adjust/rebuild • Fuel pump- complete, Zims front cross bar mount Connecting Rods: • magnaflux • check large end roundness • pin bushing replacement • replace rod bolt hardware • Balance? Crankshaft: • cleaning/polishing; spec check-runout; magnaflux; Oil Cooler: -completed • clean, • pressure test Distributor: Powder Coat:-Good old paint is better! • engine cross bar mount • cooling tin/sheet metal • air intake housing Media Blast: • timing chain housing-NO • fan-YES, clear coat • fan housing-YES, clear coat • intermediate plate cover-NO • pulley-PLATE • valve covers-NO • fan strap-YES, paint |

Thanks Dave...I know that took a lot of your time, and just what we were looking for!!
What is the norm procedure & finish for the timing chain housing, intermediate plate cover & valve covers? Thanks again for your input! Glenn |

The '70 case did NOT have the squirters, the '71 cases did HAVE the squirters. I have a '71 "T" and it NEVER got above 180 even in 110 degree South Texas heat without an external cooler. I WOULD do the squirters.
