Case together- Crank won't turn

Just started putting my 2.7 back together, Original crank, intermediate shaft and gears and oil pump, new standard mains, and intermediate shaft bearings. Cleaned like crazy. Put assembly lube on all main bearing surfaces. Torqued carefully. I thought things went together well. I tried to keep sealant away from bearings.
BUT it won't turn. My first guess is the intermediate shaft/ gears. I do remember when I lowered the crank in that it turned instead of the intermediate shaft/gears. Is there any thing I can do to find out if that is it and can I fix without splitting the case again? The only other thing I could think of is that I didn't line bore. I felt the old main had very little wear, so it must be aligned. The crank looked good and measured OK for Std. mains. I'd hate to pull it back apart, but if I have to I will.

Yes, warped case. BTDT. Don't take my word for it though...knock the through-bolt nuts loose, including the ones under the cooler and Magic! Your crank turns.

It could be warped case. Or ...

Look through the cylinder holes and oil return holes to see if any of the bearings have fallen out when you drop the top half on the bottom half. In my case, the intermediate shaft bearing fell out, landed in a way that blocked the adjacent con rod and the thing could not turn.

If you do end up splitting the case again, next time you assemble it, turn the crank after you fit the case halves together and before you torque the nuts. Then torque the nuts to half the torque value, turn the crank again to make sure it turns. Then the final torque value, then turn the crank to see if it turns. If it refuses to turn at the final torque then it is a warped case. time for a line bore.

did you check bearing clearance? strange things have happened with mis-packaging.

Being a mag case, most likely the align bore is off and the case needs some work..... All mag cases should be checked before being assembled.

Cheers

I loosened the thru bolts, nothing, then loosen perimeter nuts and yes it turned easily. So I took it back down, all bearings were in place. The case cleaned up easily as most of the 574 hadn't set-up yet (12 hours in pretty cold garage). I read Page 50 and 51 of our host's book so at least I understand why it can be OK before you take apart and then deform. it probably didn't help that it was heated to remove the head studs either. So I guess it is on to case resizing and align boring. This car and I have been together for 32 years, so I guess it is til death to us part. Neither one of us is ready to die.

It's probably been a really nice journey so far, no? Don't fret. You caught it before anything catastrophic happened. The machine work will take a little while, but it will all be OK. Breathe deeply, RELAX....
