Engine Stuck!

My Dad and I are restoring his 1971 911E. We are following the tech write up on removing the engine and have hit a snag. We have disconnected everything from the engine including the 2 nuts and 2 bolts connecting the transmission. We have removed the rear bumperettes and valance for better clearance.

We lowered the engine enough to clear the top of the engine. According to the write-up we should be able to pull the engine back and out. The engine moves but will not release from the transmission. What have we missed??? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

It's WAY easier to remove them both as a unit and then separate them while out of the car. I found it was hard enough to get the tranny removed even outside of the car. You're only a few more bolts and some linkage bits from it.

Does the clutch fork need to be disconnected?

Yes, clutch cable and swing arm under the trans should be disco'd. Just wiggle it loose and take your time to double check everything is free. I've seen plenty of wire harnesses stretched and broken with snapped connectors and the like. Doesn't take much pressure and they can be a pain to repair properly.

70/71 needs to have the throw out bearing moved (spun) 90 degrees so it clears the fork but its much easier to do together on the table than in the car.

Thanks! I suspected as much but was following the tech write-up! We did disconnect the the clutch cable, wire harness and starter wires. There was no mention of having to rotate anything.

We will attach the transmission and drop engine and transmission as a unit (we were planning on pulling the trans anyway)!

Thanks for the quick responses/help!

When this happened to us it was because a washer was holding the engine onto the transmission.

My engine wouldn't come off the transmission because the attachment studs were corroded in the transmission holes!

Smear some grease on the stud threads before putting it back togther to reduce the chance of that happening again.
Same goes for the bolts that hold the front suspension to the threaded bosses in the suspension pan so the they don't corrode into place over time.
Grease based anti seize will work too.

So today we dropped the engine and the transmission as a unit! We had one minor mishap with our jack but all in all it was a success. We loosened the bolts and nut holding the transmission to the engine and pulled them slightly apart. Using the openings on the top of the trans we tried to rotate the throughout barring. It will only move about a quarter of and inch and then won't budge!

What are we missing or not doing???

Bolt the engine and trans back together, pull the clutch arm towards the nose of the trans and rotate the T.O.B. with a long screwdriver through the hole in the bell housing. The clutch fork should fall away from the bearing. Now you can disconnect the engine and trans.
