Engine case sealing, questions (993)
I began laying out the through bolts so I can get the engine case bolted up and I appear to have lost a washer. So I checked everywhere, even drained the parts washer thinking I must have lost it while cleaning parts. No luck.
I checked the PET catalog to see how many I should have, just to be sure I really am missing one. PET says I should have 28, there are the stepped washer for the case bolts. I thought I should have 24 since there are 24 orings for the case. I have 23 washers. First question How many should I have? If it is 28, where do the ones not on through bolts go? Second question; Does anyone have some of these? I called Porsche and they are special order. Do they stock anything anymore??? Thanks Jim |

Ok, just spent some time with the PET and the parts I have.
The PET catalog calls out more washer/Orings than through nuts. I assume this must be an error in the PET catalog. I am still short 1 washer though. As I am flipping between the PET catalog and the shop manual, I notice another discrepancy that I had posted a question about yesterday. This is regarding the oil pressure relief valve at the bottom or the right half of the case. In the PET catalog the spacer ring is shown sliding over the guide sleeve. In the shop manual, the spacer ring is shown below the guide tube. The spacer ring will slide over the guide tube easily. When I disassembled, I thought I noted the spacer ring as sliding over the guide tube. Looking at the guide tube there are positional marks which appear as though the spring went against the guide tube, so the spacer must have gone below the guide tube. Does anyone know for sure which position the spacer should be in? |

You should have 24 washers and 24 O-rings (see my pics below). The extra washer and nut on the right side is for a stud inside the case. The two short thru bolts thread directly into the case so there is not a nut for those. You can buy these washers new or go to a used parts place like Parts Heaven in Hayward, CA. Or any place that deals in used Porsche parts. Make sure the missing washer is not inside the case somewhere!
No affiliation: Partsheaven New, Used, Rebuilt Porsche Parts Pressure relief valve: The spacer should go over tube and rest on the flange. The spring goes over that. ![]() |

Thanks, that is what I thought regarding the washers and orings.
Any idea why the PET is wrong? Is it known for having count and diagram issues? |

I have found that using the PET is not a good way to verify parts counts and it is really not wise to use it as a repair guide. Once I used the diagram in the PET to wire the spark plug wires to the cap. Guess how that turned out? Not good.
One reason the PET is less useful than it could be is that the pictures will show MORE parts than are required because during a model cycle things change so they show ALL the parts for ALL the models. Think a 95 993 vs a 98 993. While this is in fact spelled out in the pet (years and model numbers to the right of the part no.) it is confusing. I just checked the *********** online PET for this washer. It says "15" required. Clearly incorrect. Also, if you search Pelican for the same part number it says "13" required. Garbage In, Garbage Out. Go Figure. |

I have been using pet and the shop manual together. I am pretty good at taking pictures and bagging/labeling hardware as I disassemble so I usually dont have a problem. If I had the correct number of washers (24) I would not have even looked. Knowing the washer and oring count should be the same is what caused me to look at the pet since the shop manual does not discuss quantites.
I tried calling dc earlier, no answer. Their online service requires $100 minimum order. I have used them in the past and they are pretty good. The quality of the used parts is not always great though. Also, I ordered what I thought would be a new sai valve and six new rubber connector tubes for the intake. What I got was a nasty used sai valve, three new rubber connectors and tgree used rubber connectors. |

I did not contact them about the rubber pieces yet. |
