Head Markings
So I've done a search, looked through my library of materials and talked to some knowledgable friends. However, I cannot find a definitive answer for what each of the markings on the heads represents. Sure, I got it on the part number and year and even the RR350, but what do the other markings mean? Every book and person knows what the different markings on the cylinders mean, but what about the heads?
Here's a pic of the markings I am asking the Pelican brain trust about for reference. Thanks in advance to pointing me in the right direction to find out. I'm thinking this might be a good tech question for our next PCA event...

the K1926f is the application for the head. I briefly looked for my list to no avail but the head is a 3.0 with air injection.

Understood on the application number... there is actually a good thread around here that documents all the application numbers.
But... there's always a but... I am trying to figure out the other numbers, i.e. top left = part number top right = material used bottom right = application number bottom middle = date code What's the number between the date code and application number represent? On the bottom left, other than the little Porsche symbol that has been cut down, what are the other two markings referencing (the ones in the circles)? Thanks in advance.

I have a 1978 911SC and one of the heads looks like this:
 The date stamp of 1-78 would seem correct for the age of the car. Top left is the part number, which again, after a Google search, seems correct for this car; 930.104.328.2R. The top right just has a Y. I have no idea what that means! Bottom right is k1926d. |

I believe that head shown in the OP is a 3.0 Turbo head. The marking on the top left is the casting part number. This number is unique to the casting but it is not the part number. The part number and application of the part are determined by the subsequent machining process. The part number does not appear on the head. The marking on the upper left is the alloy used in the casting process. The RR 350 was used only on the 3.0 and 3.3 Turbo heads.

Yes, this particular picture is of a head that was R&R'd for a 930.
But might question is more generic. And it has more to do with the bottom row of markings... What does each marking mean? I assume one of them is a quality control inspector stamp, maybe? Also, where the second picture posted above has a 4, my original picture has a 2... I have seen these numbers mixed on running engines that we have torn down after being in service for a long time. I guess I was hoping one of the machining masters would share this little tidbit, but maybe it's some secret code! Haha. Thanks in advance |
