Damm damm damm
Just rebuilt cylinders 4-6 on my 79 3.0 and realized that not only are the two top rings (obvious) marked for direction the oiling ring is too... I did NOT check these when I installed 1-3 on the other side. I looked and at first glance these rings seem symmetrical??? Are they? and do I need to tear this down.. (just to make sure I have my terminology right I mean the lower, outer ring that goes over the spring...) ![]()

Get a magnifying glass and look closely at the oil ring. I think you will find a small "step" or bevel on one edge where it touches the cylinder. I just went out to my garage to confirm. The ring is designed to scrape the oil away so it doesn't push too much oil into the combustion chamber. If they are backward you will have high oil consumption and possible other problems like oil fouled plugs.

For the teardown, you might be able to do a shortcut. I've taken my engine down a couple of times to replace broken rings. You can remove the heads with the cams and rockers all installed as a unit. You will have to remove the stud in the chain housing that holds the tensioner. It gets in the way of the chain. Other than that it will all come off without taking it apart. You will save breaking loose the cam tower from the heads and all the work installing the rocker shafts.
