993 oil pump or 4 rib
I had killed my engine with kindness and I am in the process of rebuilding.
Did detonation kill my bottom end? I am going to use a 66mm crank that will not be cross drilled nor grooved bearings. I do not have piston squirters. I do have the 993 oil pump that was not killed by debris and a 4 rib oil pump I have had in stock for some time. Question is which pump to use. I am leaning toward the 4 rib since it is smaller and would require less HP to drive. Thoughts? |

Neil,
I tend to stay away from all the magnesium oil pumps. I run either 4 bar, turbo, GT-3

I thought the 993 pump was aluminum. Looks like it.

It's the 964 that has the mag pump. It was changed for the 993.

Within the past couple of months, Henry from Suptertec posted pictures and descriptions of different oil pumps with his recommendations. Maybe somebody can remember the thread title or Henry can repost.

FYI early 993 had the same mag case pump. It's a very nice pump. The only alum 993 pumps that I have seen are the 993 turbo which were alum cased. I have a turbo pump in my engine and it is much heavier then the mag version.

The 3.6 pump is magnesium. Over time, Mag pumps start to distort and bind which is why I select aluminum pumps for my customers.

Mag pumps also degrade with age in terms of the actual magnesium breaking down. Probably due to cheap oil or not changing the oil frequently enough? The most recent mag pump I worked on had what looked like oil sludge on it. It was magnesium sludge...... Granted it was on the exterior. The interior looked fine.
The 3.2 and 3.0 pumps are fantastic pumps that are indestructible (unless they ingest something). I would go for the 3.2 pump because it has the built-in scavenge screen. The separate screens are tending to come apart with age. I agree with Aaron on the 3.6 pump variants. My observations have seen the 964 is mag, 965 is iron + alum (like original 930) 993 is mag, 993 turbo is all aluminum, 996 turbo is all aluminum and the current replacement for the original bad boy 930, GT3 is all aluminum and the best of all street-based pumps (aside from 959 but that's cheating) with its extra scavenge port at the front of the pump.
