Engine Lid

I have a 1982 911 sc with an after market tail On it. It doesn't want to close all the way.
I do have the other lid. Do i need to changed out the lift supports? It is as if when I put the ones that are called for on a spoiler are too long to close it the right way. They are 7" when compressed. There are 2 kinds of eye holes on the lift supports what one is the right one? Does anyone know? Napa Auto parts is the only one I can find that has the 2 deferent lift supports. they only show the one on here.

Well, does it close with the hydraulic disconnected?

No it close's but not all the way it is like the lift is too long. It leaves a 1 inch gab before the hood is closed almost like the lift it too long to let it close all the way. Does the lift support pull the hood back down when it is closed?

the hydraulic only pushes out. aybe you need to shim the bolts holding the hinge to bring the devck around.

Do you have a support on each side or two on the left side? If a strut was added to the right side it may be interferring with the hinge. The turbo cars had a different hinge assembly on the right side than the standard cars, as the regular cars only came with one strut while the turbos had one on each side to accomodate the extra weight of the turbo tail. Often, a second strut is just added to the left side when a tail is added to a car that didn't come with a tail, but this can actually bend the lid over time because all the support is on one side, so many people have fabricated a bracket that allows a strut to attach to the right hinge, or they have sourced an actual turbo hinge. How about posting a picture?

These is the car and these is the what the hood is doing It has 2 hinges in it I have removed one of the lift supports

You can't align the lid with the lifts in place. First fit and then get the proper lifts.

The lid is alined. It closes right with out the lift supports. I guess I could just remove them but I am thinking that if I get them right they also pull and hold the lid tight closed. The hindges are shaped in a way that the lift supports not only help open the lid but also push the lid back down, it looks as if they rotate back the other way and push the lid back down.
Look at the lid on your car and see if is it pulled back down in the closed position. Too hold the lid tight in place.

I'll bet u r binding on the orientation of that strut = the larger diameter end of the strut needs to be attached to the car...the struts' inner rod attached to the lid...
try that and see how it works...

I turned it around and it made no deference.
I know they only push out the way the hinge's are look as if they might go from the bottom and rotate back up so that the strut pushes back and help hold them in place. But there is no way to see if the hood is closed So I was just asking.

The gas struts don't go over center and push the lid shut just before it's closed. The thicker part of the gas struts should be close to the firewall. Some slotted shims or washers go on the bolts between the hinge and the rear lid to get the seams lined up right.
Fiberglass after market bodywork usually needs some extra work to fit right.
Hard to say whats going on with yours without seeing it.

makes me wonder what is going on. I might get it someday but till then it sure is fun to drive
