3.6 top end gasket kit
Can somebody please tell me, how long should it normally take to do A full top end (not the case) gasket replacement on my 1990 Carerra C4 3.6 ltr engine? It has the usual problem of barrells leaking where it joins the heads, I've really got to get this sorted as I love the car but it makes me sick with the smell of burning oil.
Thanks Gus |

Depends very much on what needs to be done while its apart. When I had my top end rebuild, the labour charge was around 40hr + machine shop charges and parts. The whole job took about 6 weeks.

With a 1990, chances are your engine is the type with no gaskets or sealing rings between the cylinders and the heads. This design worked okay for many, but quite a few have experienced significant oil leakage particularly when the engine sits for a while. Many of the Porsche specialist machine shops are retro fitting sealing rings to these early P &Cs while some are just remachining the sealing surfaces to achieve a good seal. In any event, expect some additional time and money to get this dealt with properly. If you just have all the others gaskets and seals replaced, but don't deal with the cylinder/head sealing surfaces you may not be pleased with the results.

The Motor runs perfect except for the oil leaks the major leak is where the cylinder joins the block, I'm just wondering what hours are involved to do A job like this?
P'S I wrote in my orig post where the cylinder joins the head I meant to write the block. Last edited by ozzygus; 02-14-2015 at 12:29 PM.. |

You most likely have a few case through bolt orings leaking also. The orings are cheap and can be replaced one at a time without splitting the case. 40 hours is optimistic and doesn't leave a lot of time for measuring and cleaning. I budget 80 hours for a total top end including rings.
