About 3 years ago I built a hot rod for a guy.
Started with a straight 74 case, bypass, case savers, 92mm JEs @9.5, solex cams, already had basic PMO so called for the needed mods, SSIs. Great, fun, light weight car with very responsive acceleration. Bruce |

I am in the same position. I just purchased a 1974 2.7L engine complete with the CIS fuel injection for eventual installation in my 1973 914. I currently have a 2056cc type IV in the car that I rebuilt with a web-cam and Megasquirt engine management. I really like the diveability and tunability of the MS FI and ignition control compared to the dual IDF Webers the car had when I bought the car. Because of that my thoughts for the 2.7 are:
- the engine already has case savers installed for all of the head studs - a "top end" rebuild was done a short time before the 2.7 was replaced by the original owner by a 3.2 - I will am planning a complete tear down of the engine to check all clearances re-seal the case. - on the rebuild, assuming I have Mahle nikisil cylinders, I will replace the pistons with JE 9.5 cr pistons and the cam with a 964 re grind. - exhaust headers and a free flowing muffler This combo was identified by Wayne D. in his rebuilding book as being compatible with the CIS FI system while providing a nice horsepower boost. Optomistically hoping for a 30-50 hp gain for a total of 180-200 hp with good midrange torque and excellent diveability. |

I haven't been involved in 911 engine work since,.oh 2006,..when I did a top end on a 3.0,..but I did not have to split the case,..Iam sure a 3. anything is out of my price range now,..but with a 2.7 can they be rebuilt affordably or should ya hold out and pay way more for a 3 ltr ??? Thanks FM

rebuilds usually cost about the same on a 2.7 as they do on a 3.0 I am finding.

![]() ![]() The difference is case preparation and IMHO, that's not optional if you wish to have a reliable engine. Expect to spend anywhere from $2K to $3K (over a 3.0 litre), depending on precisely what is done.

If by case preparation you mean the installation of case savers and center-boring, does that really add up to $3k?

It's certainly over $2k especially if you include the crank and rod work: case halves decked and align bored, spigots leveled, case savers in mains web long bolt and head studs, squirters cleaned, oil bypass and sourcing a 4 rib mag pump if needed, dipped and cleaned...and then there's the race mods if so desired.

VERY VERY rarely, unless its a high RPM, high BHP race engine making 105-110 HP/litre.

Check Henry Schmidt's Supertec website and he lists some prices. Not cheap, but you get what you pay for.
I have one of his engines in my 914-6 conversion, and it's an absolute blast to drive (~200hp at the rear wheels - S cams, Weber carbs, RS P&Cs). Case prep is probably the most important part of the whole project, so do your homework.

Re: 2.7 budget rebuild...what kind of hp is available w/o head work?
I have a '74 2.7 that was previously rebuilt (has oil fed tensioners, 930 valve covers etc) but I'm told it was a stock-ish rebuild for a '77 car. It was a low mile rebuild as the PO went the 3.6 route rather than build the 2.7 to more power to fit a PCA class. If the heads are stock-spec, would it make sense to have them redone and improved or keep them as-is and just do a p/c and cam swap? Would I need to do case work if the case looks good? Just wondering what I'm getting into before tearing it down....or sell it and look for a 3.0? Thanks for your input.
