Disassembly Done ... Time To Rebuild 3.0

Finally back in. It's been almost exactly a year since I dropped it. Still have to finish connecting everything but at least it's back in!

Going to use this for my break-in oil.

Startup this weekend?

Hope it goes well.

Turning the key on any overhaul is always a big "pucker" moment....

No. I still have to connect all the stuff underneath. Cv joints, etc. Plus too much snow here to do the initial drives. Probably not going to start for a few more weeks.

Yes. I am very very nervous about the first start. My biggest worry is oil leaking out. [emoji31]

Don't sweat it OP, just do the proper pre-break in procedures to insure all is moving freely then go for it.

Break a leg brother!

Finally finished the remaining misc stuff. Put the tires on and took it off the jack stands.

I put the oil in and did the pressure build up today. The oil light went out within a few seconds on first try. Did it a second time per the book and it went out quickly again. No oil spray or leaks. So I'm taking this as a good sign thus far.

I'm dying to start it but I don't have time to change the oil today after I do. So I have to wait.

It's alive!!

I'm trying to attach a video but it's not working.

It took a bit of convincing to start up. But it finally did. I ran the 20 minute break in. No leaks. It smoked like crazy for about 3 or 4 minutes and then it stopped smoking which I took as a good sign. Changed the oil after 20 mins. I really didn't see all the metallic flakes that the booked talked about. I set the idle and timing.

Did two of the four initial drives. 5 mile and 10 mile. Seems to be good so far. I think I need to check my co setting. The idle does not really want to come down. I was hoping to feel a quicker engine since I fixed a few cis and distributor issues. And also changed to the dc15 cam. As well as a slight bump in compression. But it feels basically the same as I remember it. Maybe after I check co setting I'll get better power. I didn't see leaks after the drives but the ssi's were smoking. I think it may be the residual oil on them as my engine had a lot of leaks and they were covered in oil. I tried to clean them off prior to reinstall but maybe I didn't get it all. Not sure what else it could be.

Right now I'm just really happy to be driving my car after a year of rebuilding. I still can't believe I've done this myself. It's a great feeling.

My first impression when driving with my new motor was similar to yours. My new motor sounded the same as my old one. During normal driving, it even felt the same. I have spent the last two weeks fiddling with the carbs and timing. It still is eerily the same as my old motor UNTIL I get past 2/3rds throttle, then all hell brakes loose!

Do get it fine tuned, then you will probably be pleased.

Hey this is great news. Very well done. I have been following your progress over the last few months and I hope to get mine all back together in the next few weeks. Glad that the 20 minute break in went well. I have to say that's the part that I am dreading most.
Looking forward to hearing more about it.

Disassembly Done ... Time To Rebuild 3.0

Thank you. Good luck on your rebuild. The start of the engine is pretty nerve racking. However I did find that having to crank the starter to build oil pressure gives some piece of mind that it's going to be ok.

I did some more break in driving today. Put another 25 miles on. Need to do another 45 miles before I change the oil again. After coming home I adjusted the timing again. And set the CO. It was pretty lean. Went out for another test drive...

Never mind what i said before about feeling the same. This is a totally new car. Power is definitely improved. Acceleration is great in all rpm ranges. It's amazing.

I still have some high idle issues I need to address. But i will finish the initial break in drives before I dive into that.

Finished the last of my initial drives. Car feels great. Love the power on the new cams. Feel like I have much more power and acceleration than before. Dumped the oil after the drive and will refill with Kendal gt-1 competition for the next 500 miles. No smoke or leaks as of yet. So I am happy. Still can't believe I rebuilt this thing myself.
