Hey 2J:
I am beginning my 82 3.0 teardown as a first timer (on 911) with experience limited to having done a few 356 and 914 engines in the distant and near past with good outcomes. A couple of questions: What machine shop are you using for cam, crank, and other services? I have used Comp.Engineering in the past builds to great satisfaction and am seeing a few guys swearing by Ollie's in Lake Havasu City As well as Surf City Machine Shop..... Also, do you know of anyone who rents P-tools that we will (hopefully) only need a few hours within the entire process of disassembly and reassembly? Thanks for a response if time permits. |

Hi Forrestkhaag,
Apologies for the late response. For case, crank, and rods machining I am going with Engine Machine Services as recommended by a friend: Engine Machine Services (EMS) Bill Duncan or Dick Nuss 827 W. Olive St, Inglewood, CA 90301 310-641-7019 As far as tool rental I would say do a search here, the technical forum, and the classifieds. I am sure I have seen several rebuild threads that mention members who rent out tools however I am too new to be familiar with them. Hope this helps!

$15 per rocker shaft sounds like less expense than many of the things we replace. Me, I've just tried to turn the shafts on reinstallation so the rocker now bears only on the less worn side. But these are race motors and I'm not looking for 200,000 miles before another rebuild. Replacing with new is naturally the safer option, but because the rockers don't bear at the same pressure all the way around the shaft, rotation seems to work. Of course it is also yet another detail you have to get right when installing them.
