Question Cam Shaft Installation Lube?

Hey Fellas

So read up on installing Cam Shafts, it stated I need to use Lube like Swepco101 Moly Grease ( CV Joint Lube ).

Question I have is has anyone tried using Dow Corning MOLYKOTE gear oil additive or something similar or better?

I use the stuff for my 915 gear box sticks to every metal part, for the engine, any residue that remains will be caught in the oil filter and wondered if it would a good idea to use for the installation of new to me 964 Cams? Of course I will change the oil after 500 miles or less.

TIA,

Jim

You should be fine with that. Most important thing is to NOT let the engine idle at the first start.
The hydrodynamic wedge that lifts the rocker off the lobe is speed dependant-higher revs=
more film thickness.

Whoa, scary.

Thanks for the Heads Up, Master Mark!

So, where should the RPM be and how long for initial start up and "break in"?

Fear not Draco.. Most cam manufacturers say at least 1500 minimum-I'd shoot a bit higher.
say 2000 or so. Ideally it's best on a new engine to just drive it-gently ASAP. You need some load to seat rings which one does want to be careful with on a Nickasil cylinder.
More revs aren't going to hurt cam break in either.

And of course the standard disclaimer that idling is the worst thing to do to a 911 engine.

Ah ha!

Most grateful, funny how it is not mentioned in the Bentley/videos/threads or I may have missed it.

Oh yes, I will be driving her very gently the first 500 miles and change the oil soon after.

I am just swapping the cams & seals/orings, new rsr seals for the rocker shafts ( there are leaking ), refurbed rockers. I am on the fence about the springs or just save my new ERP springs for a real rebuild down the road.

My main reason was to verify timing as it is suspected the previous rebuild, timing was not set properly then recently a rocker shaft walked out on me

Again Thank You Master Mark!

In the process, just waiting to receive some loaner tools from a gracious Pelican

I have pretty much all the parts and ready to go.

I will be posting the 3.2 Cams once I have them removed.

Dow makes great products and we have documented our use of Dow 55 on all o-rings in 911 air-cooled engines but for bearing surfaces we use Supertec SpeedLube.
After 15 years of development and testing it is now offer exclusively through Supertec Performance and 911 Vintage Parts 760-731-4911

We also offer SpeedLube Bearing Life to fortify oils used in air-cooled engines, both turbo and NA.

It's outlined in Waynes book and every cam supplier, I have ever seen, says no less than 2000 RPM for the first 20 minutes.
