In my opinion the better question is what a good machine shop would be for this job, that knows what they are doing and you don't have to specify to them how to clean what part.
Yes I did give the the whole head assembly. I think most people do that but maybe some others will chime in too. |
Great documentation. Subscribed.
What's next? |
If you had removed the MAF and air box before the drop, would it have cleared without removing the bumper?

Yes, you could but the rubber elbow may still hit but you can exit out the muffler cut out.

Great post, thanks for documenting. Just wondering, are we all past the red fan stigma now? Haven't seen it mentioned. Personally I love the look but I know it evokes a certain... what's the word... "feeling" among our members! Great build!
|
To be honest I wasn't aware of any "red stigma", nor I care, but I always thought on these engines the fan is such a focal point that it had to be powder coated, and since the car is silver with a red interior I wanted to stick to that scheme.
Speaking of red, I also had the calipers rebuilt and did consider powder coating those also but IMO red calipers are really over done and ended up just leaving the yellow Zink finish. I guess different tastes... Sent from my SM-N900V using Tapatalk |
I agree with you about the fan. I opted for powder coating both fan and housing black. I just know the whole motormieser (spelling?) thing, those guys always did red fans and I've seen a lot of "opinions" on this forum about it. Personally, I like the red fan look. I also agree about the red calipers. Show us some pictures with the refinished zink coating!

This is not the right forum for the brakes, and I will do another thread about the rest of the work, since I rebuilt the entire chassis, but here is a picture that shows the rebuilt calipers done by Eric at PMB Performance.

It's alive
Managed to get all the electrical connectors on and new hoses hooked up, clamps tightened, 10 quarts of oil filled, filter put on, and voila there is "liftoff"
There was not much drama, no smoke and the engine ran smoothly and quietly. There is one valve that is a bit louder, but we'll get when we adjust the valves at the next oil change in about 500 miles. After the initial 20 min run with Brad Penn break in oil we immediately drained it and filled it with fresh B-P 10-40 dino This is what it looks like revving at 2000 RPM https://media.giphy.com/media/l378Ai...TP3y/giphy.gif Here are a couple of static shots from above... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508647111.jpg ... and below. The shield from the CAT is not yet put on, and the 2nd strap from the muffler is also missing. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508647135.jpg |
I also have a couple of questions
Hoping some of you guys have some ideas.
1. When I remove the oil filler cap while the engine is running it stalls. I realize it's usually a sign of not having a breather hose connected, but they are. In fact they are all new including a new ambient air valve. Any ideas what might be causing this? 2. I have a few mystery wires that were not hooked up to anything when I bought the car. It ran fine and still does (see above) as is, however, I would still like to put them where they belong. We have not checked the wiring diagram yet what these might be, but they are coming from the driver side corner of the firewall and seem to be going to the back part of the rear fuse/relay box, where (I am guessing) have some relays missing. Any ideas what these might be for and what parts I am missing? Here is a picture of the wires (they just had electrical tape on the ends) and I am holding them at where I think they belong. FYI there are 4 wires (2 red, 3 brown, and 1 brown with a white stripe) Thx in advance.http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1508648479.jpg |

check for the air flow reducing valve in the breather hose connection to the filler neck of the oiltank. I fittet that valve to my SC from a Carrera. http://up.picr.de/30749089hw.jpg |
That's a good tip. Thanks. Maybe that reducer got twisted blocking the air.

Engine graphic T
I did a design with the sketch of a Porsche engine and started a thread for orders.
If you are interested pls respond on the 911 parts for sale section and indicate the size and quantity. Here is the link: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-used-parts-sale-wanted/978767-taking-orders-engine-graphic-t-shirts.html FYI, these will be on a light weight 100% soft 100% cotton shirt and the artwork is my original sketch. You cannot find this anywhere else. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1511709498.jpg |
This is an awesome looking build!

Here is a long due update.
The car was smogged and registered in June, but first I needed to install a new cat since I failed the emission test with the original one. Since then, I drove about 700 miles and the engine is running great. We installed a smaller muffler and the tip is coming through the bumper. It sounds pretty good IMO. Shot a small video driving the car. Some of you might have seen this in my other thread in the 911 technical section, but I wanted to add it here too. BTW, the car is up for sale, but until then I enjoy driving it. <!-- BEGIN LINKED VIDEO --> <div class="ytvideo"> <a target="_blank" href="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dzphER1MyX4?rel=0"> <img src="https://img.youtube.com/vi/dzphER1MyX4/0.jpg"></a> <p class="yt_hd">1987 Porsche 911 Carrera restoMOD - YouTube</p> <p class="yt_ft">Video will open in a new window<br>If the link does not work, paste the text below into a browser window:</p> <span class="yt_tag" style="display:none">[isdntekvideo]</span> <input class="yt_inp" type="text" value="https://www.youtube.com/embed/dzphER1MyX4?rel=0"> </div> <style> .ytvideo * { box-sizing:border-box; } .ytvideo { margin:.5em auto 40px auto; max-width:480px; font-family:arial; text-align:center; position:relative; min-height:120px; background-color:#555; } .ytvideo p { position:absolute; margin:0; color:white; background-color:rgba(0,0,0,.5); } .ytvideo .yt_hd { font-size:16px; width:100%; height:28px; line-height:28px; text-align:left; top:0; left:0; padding-left:10px; overflow:hidden; } .ytvideo .yt_ft { font-size:12px; width:100%; bottom:0; left:0; } .ytvideo img { display:block; max-width:100%; border:0; } .ytvideo a:after { content:"\A0\25BA"; position:absolute; width:60px; height:50px; left:0; top:0; right:0; bottom:0; margin:auto; border:0; border-radius:10px; color:white; background:rgba(0,0,0,.6); font-size:24px; line-height:50px; cursor:pointer; } .ytvideo a:hover:after { background:#CC181E; } .ytvideo .yt_inp { position:absolute; top:100%; left:0; width:100%; text-align:center; padding:.5em .2em; xfont-size:18px; border:0; color:white; background: rgba(0,0,0,.7); } @media(max-device-width:960px){ .ytvideo { margin-bottom:60px; } .ytvideo .yt_inp { padding:1em .2em; } } </style> <!-- END LINKED VIDEO --> |
