WANTED: Engine Build part sheet

Wayne R Dempsey has a comprehensive parts list at the end of the book that shows all parts needed for a complete engine rebuild.

I am about to start this process, and am wondering whether anyone already has such a comprehensive list in spreadsheet format.

I really dont want to have to create one from scratch...

"Comprehensive" is open to interpretation. How far do you want to go?
For instance, Waynes book suggests replacing timing chains and ramps, but do you also want to replace the cam gears, idler pulleys and shafts, and the IMS gears? No one really says how long those should last.

Are you guys aware that pelican has an engine rebuild wizard that builds a list for you? You could run through it in less than five minutes.

All I'm trying to suggest is that every engine is different, and using a pre-made list will most likely leave you with too few or too many parts. You really won't know everything that needs replacing until you get into the engine.

Newbie to this, but also trying to budget a top end refresh and starting to acquire parts to do it later this year - I saw that wizard, and it's very comprehensive, but it looks like it's the parts list for an entire rebuild. It would be cool to be able to narrow it down based on project/need. Maybe you can already do that, but I couldn't really figure out how to make it work.

I did buy Wayne's book and it should be arriving soon.

I don't see a build wizard. I searched for 'engine build wizard' and 'engine rebuild wizard' , found nothing. There are a few tech articles but I didn't see anything resembling a wizard. Can you point me in the right direction?

In my experience the internal parts are to cheap to not replace everything. Think of all of the time and effort you are putting into building the motor. People seem to have no issue spending $3-$4K working their heads and another $2K on head studs etc...

The reality is that at my shop "cost" or basically what you can buy the stuff online for, there is only about $1000-$1500 worth of parts that people are usually like "that stuff is ok" and leave alone. Why not just replace it?

The internals on these motors are not that complicated so if you are splitting the case and going all the way down to the oil pump, why not just open the oil pump up, inspect and clean it unless you plan to replace it and that gets pricier. Go ahead and replace the intermediate shaft "O" gear, they are cheap enough for just the gear - whole shaft is not cheap though but usually the shaft itself is fine. Replace the chain gears on the intermediate shaft and basically everything they touch. If you do that along with a good job of putting the bottom end together then you should not have any problems that would require splitting the case again.

Do the job right the first time. You won't regret it.

Hello everyone and thank you for your patience. After doing some research on our side and speaking with our in-house certified, master tech, we highly suggest/recommend using the Engine Rebuild Parts Wizard on our site that other members were referencing above. I was originally going to post the information from PET (which is what I was waiting to gain access to), but after reviewing it; the program still does not include everything needed which will lead to more questions than answers. We realize that the Rebuild Wizard lists some needed parts as 'NLA', but many of these parts are in fact available. A quick google search with that part name followed by 'pelican parts' will lead you to our catalog section for that available part. We are going to work on getting those parts updated in the program itself, but this will take some time. I have also included various links on the rebuild process below. *Please note that the wizard currently only goes to Porsche models until about 1988; meaning that 964/993 on engine rebuild options are not currently present - again, something that we will update in the future. I hope that you all find this helpful and know that we are working on updating the current version. So the original request was for a spreadsheet based on the list in Wayne's book and what we got, after consulting with Pelican Parts in-house certified expert techs (aka Pelican employees) was a reply to use the Pelican engine build wizard so Wayne can sell more parts ....

Hopefully other members, other than the parts salesman, may have the excel spread sheets we were hoping for?
