How far does flywheel seal protrude?
Well we put the cases together but I'm wondering if the flywheel seal made it in all the way. It appears to protrude about 1-2mm past the edge of the case in that area.
Are they supposed to? Or should it be flush? THere's still 1/2" inside the case, do I need to remove and re-install? THanks,

It should be flush or a little below the surface of the case.

Sorry if I am asking a dumm question here:
From what I understand you can replace this seal with the case together. So if yours protrudes, why can't you just drive it in further until it is flush? I want to replace the flywheel seal on my 3.6 before I put on the flywheel and ready it for my conversion.

Yup, just tap it in a bit further. You typically replace this seal when you do a clutch job...

Wayne,
I tried that actually... Tapped it. THUMPED IT... Then took a good whack at it (with a rubber mallet... It doesn't move at all! I think the Curil-T around the perimeter is preventing it...

Chris,
I think the way that seal is seated, it is probably providing a better seal then if you were to install it with the case together. Besides if the seal leaks, you'll have a crew waiting to replace it ![]() |

I put a little goop on the seal and then tapped it in lightly with a block of wood laid across it. Once it's almost flush, use something round and about the same diameter to get it all the way. I can't remeber what I used, but I went through one seal before I got it right.

Well see, that's the thing... It won't move at all. I tried tapping it in with wood... It won't go in any further...
My choice is to horse it out, or to leave it in and see if it works...

Either way you're playing with fire. Spend $18 on a new one, rip the old one out and put the new one in the right way. Ask yourself if saving $18 is worth a potentially huge oil leak at the flywheel and another engine R&R.

Got the tool............
Chris,
I have the fancy-schmansy installation tool if you'd like to use it. ![]() Works really good. Works so good, I installed my new seal a CH too deep. I also have the pulley side too too. ![]() Kevin
