Machining for a standard 2.2E rebuild

Hi there,

I'm looking for some advice on Case machining for my 2.2E rebuild to pretty much standard spec.
I've had mixed opinions from different people and want to try and get this locked down. One reputable engine guy in the UK has told me if the head studs are all solid leave them alone...
But then people have said to have piston squirters fitted and have the case decked which means removing the studs.

So do I...

A - Line hone case and do oil bypass Mod.

B - Line hone, Oil bypass, piston Squirters, Deck, Case saver/Time sert head studs.

Thanks in advance

If it was me I would do the following.

Remove all head studs. Inspect all threads for integrity. Repair only if required. You can test one at a time by installing stud, cylinder and head and re tighten nuts to check.
Measure the flatness of the decks
Do the by pass mod
Piston squirters only if you will drive the engine hard. Its a temperature thing.
Measure the alignment of the main housing webs. If aligned and the sizes need slight change line hone only.
If the webs are out of alignment you need to bore.

There is no such thing as align honing. There is line honing. The hone will always follow the hole. If you need to change the alignment, honing will not do this, Boring does. Honing changes only the hole size.

You're gonna get some sticker shock but there's no way around a lot of this because of the magnesium case:

Align Bore Mains
Surface Case Halves
Bore Back To STD.
Deck Cylinder Surface (spigots)
Install Oil Squirters
Oil By-Pass Modification - be sure to source 4 rib pump
Case saver head studs and 8mm stud in mains web

The 1st 4 are pretty much automatic for disassembled Mg cases. You have to return everything back to level/square or you'll never get the engine reassembled.

The factory included the bypass mod and oil squirters later cases. Both these mods are relatively inexpensive and extremely effective.

These magnesium cases are prone to pulled studs. And, as they age, they will become more so. You have to do case savers on at least the head studs and that big one in the case.
