The R style assemblies save somewhere in the 5-10 pound range, I think. Like door panels, I'd have to say the biggest benefit/appeal is the cool, retro look.
The door jams simply haven't changed, over time. So there's no advantage -- I just needed a new set, and the current ones have superceded all the previous models.
