911 as a mosaic of years
I was buying some parts last week and the dealer asked me what year my car was. I said "a '73 -- mostly." Then explained the unit body was a '73, the engine an '86, the banana arms from a '77, rest of the suspension from a Carrera, the tranny from a '69... and it gets worse.
I'm wondering how many people out there have back dated some things to earlier years (insturments and trans come to mind, if not the door panels), and fwd dated other things (suspension, engine). |

My car has a little bit of every model in it.
It's got replicas of the early 911R taillights, along with plenty of other early (pre-74) parts -- since the tub itself is a 72. Its trailing arms, transaxle, center console, gas tank and rear-view mirrors are from 74-77 cars. Some of the AC pieces are from an SC. One of the oil coolers comes from a Carrera. The motor is from a 964. The brakes and tie rods are from a 930. The dash is from a 964 Turbo. The door jams are from a 993, and the rear badge is from (eek!) a 996.

Yes, I was thinking of your car....
BTW, any idea how much those R type tailights weigh? Door jams? What is the adv. of the 993 ones? |

The R style assemblies save somewhere in the 5-10 pound range, I think. Like door panels, I'd have to say the biggest benefit/appeal is the cool, retro look.
The door jams simply haven't changed, over time. So there's no advantage -- I just needed a new set, and the current ones have superceded all the previous models.

I think there is a Country and Western song in this thread somewhere. My car is a frankenstein as well, early chassis, later motor and tranny, works very well. The combination of light weight and big horsepower is pretty hard to beat.

Mine's mostly '73 and '87, with a few other odd years thrown into the mix.

I like the retro look of the tail lights myself.
Where can I find the early 911R taillights?

I think the LEGO of automobiles goes to the VW Bug - children's toys.
Porsches are more like the Erector Set - far more complex than anything LEGO has to offer ... except maybe the "Technic" collection, but that's still made of plastic. I'm such a dork.

Looking at the rating on this thread, it appears that the purists are offended. Bummer. How many other cars had a generally stable design over so many years that enabled this interchangability? Great engineering and product evolution, that's for sure.
