weird powerband

I'm driving my wife's 83 533i this week and it is having this wierd surging when you lean into the throttle any higher that 1/4. It's not very pronounced but I am in tune as this car is nowhere near my daily driver and I am going to explore it thoroughly. It is almost like a very gentle turbo lag all the way through the rev band that comes in and out but without any abruptness. I liken it to when you bring a boat down from speed and the waves you've created start to hit you from the rear.

Is it an automatic, or a manual transmission?

sorry,... it's a five speed and this "rolling thunder" is most noticable in maybe 2nd and 3rd when acceleration is not so abrupt. (still a very quick car for 22yrs).
It is very hard to drive my 325i and this 533i back to back as the gear ratios are absurdly high for the 3 and way low for the 5. What a strange combo I have gotten myself into. Just wait until I find a nice 80's 911 and then I will be thoroughly confused !

Are all the seals, hoses, and other various pressured components in good shape?

I would'nt know,.....aren't wives 'spose to thoroughly inspect their vehicles belts and hoses on a weekly basis?
Thanks,.....it does sound as though something is twisting and a crease or something is opening and screwing up the system. That would only be logical .
