Still Getting "Check Engine Oil Level" After New Sensor

I have a 2003 525i M54 with approx 50k miles. Out of no where the "Check Engine Oil Level" would come on when the car was turned off. I checked the oil level and it was fine. Car runs clean and hardly uses up any oil. So bought a new oil level sensor and replaced it when changing the oil. I still get the message. The oil is at the top of the level. From what I read this message is suppose to dissappear automatically when level is correct. Does something need to be reset or any other ideas what could be wrong? Thanks

Based on what you have done so far I would check the wiring coming from the sensor.

Have you had any problems with oil sludge?

No sludge. Extremely clean actually. Only around 50k miles too. Does anyone know if this warning needs to be reset with a tool or some otherway ? All these fake warning messages are very annoying. I have a 99 e36 and now it is flashing the "Check Coolant Level" when the coolant level is fine. Notes say to replace the sensor on that one too but I'm kind of hesitant since the oil level sensor ( $100 ) did not fix the problem so far with the e39. On top of that my e36 has the passenger airbag light on too which will costs me $400 to fix. Fixed that one before 20k miles ago - geez! At least I got the Check Brake Lining light to go off on the E39 after I replaced the front brakes and rotors( Akebono - no dust!)

Check coolant level is likely the coolant reservoir is cracked internally and need to be replaced or just ignore the message. There are thread in this forum on it.

Airbag light should checked then reset and see if it returns. It is common for the airbag light to be caused by the pass seat sensor and it may only come on once or twice a year. Usually when you set a box or a bag in the seat.

Brake lining light went off after you replaced the brake lining sensor.

I cant answer you main question about the check oil level message. I would check the wiring then figure out how to test the sensor in place.

Thanks Jeron,

I've reset the AB first and it took about a week or two before it came on. So I reset it again and it flashed on as soon as my daughter sat on it. So I'm considering it toast. That replacement is a hassle and you have to buy new foam if you want the seat to feel right. Did it once already.

Funny thing with my "Check Coolant Level" msg is that the level is perfect. Does not appear that I'm losing any fluid in a leak anywhere. I did flush it out about 2 months ago. Maybe I should try to re-bleed it again.

Main problem is the stupid "Check Engine Oil Level" msg the e39 keeps flashing when you turn the engine off. I'll fool with the connection again. Perhaps undo the battery connection and let it sit a while - dunno exactly.

Thanks again,

Mark

The cracked coolant tank is a common problem. The crack is internal and it will not leak it just doesnt keep the level on the proper side of the dual chamber tank.

Good Link!

I see I can get a new tank which comes along with the sensor for $56 at Pelican. Probably not a bad item to replace regardless at 10 years/70k.

Thanks

Mark

Definitely a good preventive maint item. The tank is under pressure and will eventually crack or burst.

I also suggest all the hoses you are willing to do and possibly a new radiator cap.

Consider a whole cooling system replacement.
radiator, fan blades (or replace it with aftermaket electric fan), belts, check your belt pulley bearings, water pump

I got a solid aluminum radiator off ebay for <$150 that I am very happy with.

Mark,

Any luck with the "check engine oil level" msg? I see it on my '03 X5 as well. Oil level is okay, replaced oil sensor as well.

Thanks.

Girish,

Unfortunately just living with it at this point. The e39 is my wifes ( so she is living with it). Nice if anyone else could point us in the right direction.

I drive an e36 convetible. I've been working on. Just replaced most of my cooling system components. Have to get back to the wife's e39 someday.

Good luck,

Mark
