My front tire looks different, problem?

Hi all,
went to wash at my bike today and discovered tread in the center but no tread within 3 inches of the sides. Scott had noticed this on our ride Sunday. I assumed it was from me running extrenely low tire pressure in the front a couple of weeks back,(scratched the head), and it created a wear pattern which caused the tire to go away prematurely,( less than 2600 on a front tire). But tonight I got an alert about Metzeler 12x70x17 M1 tires having problems. It makes me wonder, do I call this number or do I mark it down to lack of maintance.

Check the date codes on the tire. If it is not 0403 or 0503, you'll be buying your replacement tire.

Plus the failure mode you describe does not match the one in the recall info.

OTOH if it is one of those two date codes - call the number and quit riding the bike until the tire is replaced!!!

best,

Dave

Jeff, it's because your speedo reads 30mph too low and you still double the corner speed signs. Go ride with some Harley guys for the next 3,000 miles and you'll even that tire out.

Low tire pressure can definitely cause that. I seriously doubt the recall will affect anyone on this board. There were only 53 tires made during the period and the likelyhood is slim in my opinion. Keep a good eye on your tire pressures and you should be able to double that mileage.

Thanks guys,
Its a new tire time.

Scott, I cann't ride with Harleys for two reasons. 1. Remember 80% are still on the road, that means only 20% made it home. 2. they don't ride in the rain it might ruin the shine of all that chrome. Now all you dual BMW- Harley riders on this board don't get your panties in a bunch, I'm only kidding.

dont worry about them, they bought the bmw to ride when it rains. or to have a dependable ride when the chrome doesnt get them home

I agree about the low pressure....on a trip last Spring, one of the group had extreme side wear like you describe in his front tire.

He had been (unknowingly) running 22psi in the front, and that wear happened rather quickly.

yikes. the front tire is the last place i would want to run that low. had a friend with a dyna low ride and she moved her bike one and and scared the crap out of me when i saw how low the front tire looked. we checked the air and it was like 20 or less psi. that thing handled like crap anyways, this just made it worse. once we topped her off, she siad, "wow, it actually feels like i can steer this thing now" had to wonder how long she had been riding it like that.

repoe3,
I know, I spaced it. Had the flu for a week and the bike sat for 10 days. Came out wanting to ride and scratched the head, lesson learned.
