Red face newbie opened fork bleeder screw

I added Randy Johnson barbacks to my "S" today. It was real easy accept for me not knowing what I was doing at first. I went about removing the left handle bar by taking off the black cap on the fork end and then unscrewed the brass bleeder screw at the top of the fork tube. Realizing what it was I tightened it back on and then untightened the allen screw clamping the handle down and puff its off. Did I do something that's going to hurt my bike by unscrewing the bleeder screw?
As far as the barbacks go, they went on easy, I had to clip some wire ties under the body work to get enough slack, had to rotate the bango clamp on the clutch reservoir and I was done.
Tested the feel in my garage only since northeast weather stinks. I think they are going to be great and they look cool. Just enough up and back movement to give more comfort. Also I can swivel them out to make the bars farther apart for more leverage if desired.

Might even be an improvement.
Anyone know for sure why they're even there? Many modern dirtbikes have bleeders in the fork tops, so excess air can be bled off (small amount of air actually get pulled in in normal use and pressure mounts over time on many forks that seal very well)

Never really knew the reason for these in particular.

from the service manual......
Install fixed tube.
• Install washer (5).
• Oil the shaft seal slightly and push it on as far as
possible (to stop on slider tube) by striking it
lightly with drift, BMW No. 31 5 610, and reducing
adapter, BMW No. 31 5 613.
• Install retaining ring and dust wiper.
• Insert bleed screw (1).
• Push slider tube bridge home on slider tubes and
tighten securing screws.
• Bleed telescopic forks under zero load.

I think they are there to hold the little black caps on top the forks:-)

nice

They look really nice, turned out well then. What about finishing the tops in black to blend in ?

Just a thought....

Feedback when you finally get a run with them..
