Good news, boys...

According to a high-ranking BMW official, there will be an R1200S. I was talking with Chris from SJBMW in the BMW chalet at Laguna Seca, and asked him what he'd heard. He grabbed a BMW guy who he'd said would know for sure, and his reply was along the lines of "your wildest dreams and efforts for 120+ hp from the R1100S will soon be all be done for you." Apparently, this same guy was also talking about equivalent power to a 996 at another function. Believe it, or not...

Hey Steve, its been a go for many months and its getting better because the word is going out more freely. I plan on having mine by November and this is the word I have recieved. Chris would have inside track to these plans and it great you heard it from a BMW person, high ranking or not. Long live the S twin, especially if it has brakes like the new K. 120 HP at the crank would yield about 108 at the rear wheel. As a rule of thumb think in terms of 105 (or slightly more) peak HP and 82 foot pounds of torque at the rear wheel. Can we hardly wait? No.

I am surprised that we are not seeing spy shots, we got quite a few of the other models well before they were released.

Hopefully it won't look as ugly as some recent ones... (ST) All that stuff about not being photogenic and it looks better in person is BS. The thing looks like a sored knee.

I sincerely doubt we will have R1200S's on the dealers floor by November. The R1200GS HP2 is just now going into production the end of this month and should hit the floors late September. That means there's about 2 months from the production line to the USA dealers floor in a perfect world, which we dont live in. BMW AG pretty much shuts down the month of August which means little to no production. At best if there is a solid R1200S, it couldnt physically be produced until end of september early October and then youre looking at a minimum of 2 months before we get any. There has been no official announcement and Laguna Seca would have been the place to launch it if they had a production model ready to show. I give it another 6 months to a year before we see an R1200S. My other hunch is the R1200S if/when offered will be an HP2 type offering with limited production and price tag to go with it.

I guess they must figure that they have satisfied the sport riders with the recent K offerings. I have to say, the they did do an excellent job on these bikes. I am happy with the overall package I have on my bike (if I could get this &#*$()# clutch thing sorted out). Sure, I would love to see what they could do with a new twin sport bike. The ST is a great ride, so that is a good benchmark to work against. Too bad the front view is so... fugly.

after my S died again, leaving me stranded 45 miles from my hotel, not to mention over 400 miles from home, i can't wait for the new one to arrive! i think mine is done for the season, unless i can find a competent mechanic who knows how to attach the cam sprocket to the cam so that it won't counter-rotate off... I fully blame my dealer's service department, not the bike or bmw... Lance

I for one hope the front end stays, I wouldn't be interested in a telescopic front end. Sports tourer still required as far as I'm concerned, still a hole in the market for this type of machine, if they can improve the S to the same degree thay have improved the other twins I will be happy, for the time being I'm happy to wait, I'll probally have to wait awhile longer also , I don't like being the Beta Tester of products.

PD you might be waiting for a while, the Doc is out for periods of time and unable to answer questions or take apointments. Since i have proprietary information, he is most liuekly accurate in what he saying regarding delivery. All things going well a few of us will have options on first deliveries. The R-S is happening, i have this from multiple good resources that i do not want to discuss, wait till they start leaking the MP or whatever it is searies bikes, they will be class acts all the way. BMW is really stepping up on this factory perfomance thing. Of course a fellow can just buy a stock K1200R or S and do just fine now a days, or wait for the more classic newer R-S bikes, either way ya cant go wrong, its a BMW and the bestest!
