Hi,
To cut a long story short, I have a question, that I hope you can help answer.... Q. On the R1100S rear swinging arm, there is a fixed stud and a floating stud (with flange nut) that secure the rear bevel box. Does anyone know the pitch of the floating stud for our bike? I have narrowed it down to two possible options: M24 x 1.25 Pitch M24 x 1.50 Pitch [This message has been edited by gyorwar (edited 11-07-2001).] |

Don't know off the top of my head, and couldn't find it in the manual. Looking at mine, I can't tell w/o taking it all apart.
Are there enough threads (at least 4, ideally 8) to count and measure? i.e. if 8 threads at 1.25 should be 10mm, whereas 8 at 1.5 would be 12. You can pretty easily see measure the diff between 10 and 12. Of course, holding it up to a thread gauge, or a standard 8x1.25 or 10x1.5 is good too. Of course it's a generalization, but usually from 10mm up, and very very nearly always above 16mm, the pitch is either 1.5 or 2.0 (even 1.75 isn't too common) Sorry I can't be more helpful. Good luck roger |

Thanks for your help Roger, and my complements on your web page.
I am hopeful that some kind S owner will be able to help answer my question, as I'm in a bit of a pickle..... I need to know the correct pitch of the floating stud before I start the next job on my bike - changing the output bearings in my bevel box. ![]() ![]() OK I've got the answer from a very helpful "James" from James Shirlock BMW Motorcycle Spares: The R1100S floating stud bolt is - M24 x 1.25 That's good news because a couple of weeks ago I payed out £65 for an M24 x 1.25 tap to chase the thread in my swinging arm. I slightly damaged the last couple of threads when removing the stud bolt. I understand that this sort of oops is not that uncommon, and after chasing the thread I was very pleased with the result ![]() My friend John asked to borrow the tap (for his next door neighbour) to chase the thread on an older R1100RT they were working on. Day later John returns with the tap and the RT stud bolt, looking very pissed off. John's neighbour had started 'chasing' the thread until John noticed that he was cutting a totally new thread ![]() And sure enough the RT stud bolt is a coarser pitch thread, it's shorter and the locking nut has no flange. At this point I seriously started to doubt my ability to measure a thread ![]() So I think there is a lesson here for us all: Don't lend any of your tools to my mate John, as his next door neighbour is a total f@!*ing idiot! Hi,
Thanks for taking time to post back the correct result. Always good to learn something. I'd have never guessed 1.25 on 24mm diam. Glad I didn't bet. Since it varies by model, it sounds like BMW themselves haven't get determined the ideal size. take care roger
