I couldn't think of a better way to get that look on her face. Yeah, normally shoot aperture priority to get the depth of field I want. Then adjust the ISO to the lowest level that gets me a decent shutter speed.

Brock- I haven't come to any conclusions on the detail. Resolution-wise, it's about an 8-9 MP equivalent. I really like the 3D qualities and the richness of the images, though.

Lennie- I didn't know you were stationed in SF. Peet's is really popular and oftentimes a community hangout.

The DP1 image quality is quite nice and super sharp... though so is my Canon 5D's image quality when I resize it to merely 5 megapixels a la the DP1. For a compact camera I think the image quality is mostly unmatched. I'm very interested in the DP2 and hope Sigma worked out the slow operation issues and odd quirks. It would be a swell camera for light traveling.

The word is it does operate faster. Also f/2.8 instead of f/4. But it went from 28mm to 41mm, which would probably hurt more than help for me. I'll bet in a year there will be more choices for stuff like this, too.

Sigma just bought the company that developed the unique sensor, Foveon. Should bode well for more development on the cameras.

More here....

So Steve, how has the shutter delay been on the DP1? I heard a tip that if you shoot in manual focus mode it all but disappears....and with a 28mm lens, who needs auto?

Autofocus seems fairly slow. Like you said, manual focus has no delay. I was using the AEL button to lock exposure on the bright area of what I was going to shoot and the manual says I can use it to lock focus as well. I'm assuming the camera has "normal" depth of field, since the sensor is DSLR-size.

I just got back from a business trip to Saudi Arabia. I got to see some sights but not much. Here are a few snap shots from my P&S.

First I had a day in Germany so I drove from Frankfurt down to Bad Aibiling where I lived for 3.5 years in the mid 90s. Here is a shot of the Alps near Irschenberg Germany, south of Munich near Rosenheim. It was cloudy, hazy, and I had been getting rained on, so the weather was pretty good for this time of the year.

Here is the church in the Town of Schonau, this church has a bell that is loud and rings a lot. It took some getting used to as I lived about 100 meters from the church.

After hanging out in Bayern and visiting some old friends I realized I was on a work trip and drove back up to Frankfurt for the night. I flew to Saudi the next day. I had work in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam

Here is a shot of the Red Sea at Jeddah, It was not even red.

And here is a shot of the Persian Gulf taken from the causeway near the boarder to Bahrain.

The tower on the Saudi side, I could not get a real good shot of the one on the Bahrain side, but the only difference is the flag.

I have a lot of shots of traffic, road signs, and stuff like that I will spare you all. It was a fun trip but it is good to be home. Dammam seemed more easy going than Riyadh, farther from the holy city and more xpats and international business probably explains it. I saw a Ducati/Lambroghini dealership, and stopped at the Harley dealer to get a T-Shirt for a friend. If I had to spend an extended stay in Saudi, I would hope for Dammam. I could not find a BMW cycle dealership so if you get an EWS in Saudi I guess you are hosed.

Thanks for the Germany photos, in May I was between the two Feldkirchen's and then headed west. My last night on the road was in Zell am See, I went through Reifing on the way back to Munich.

Twist my arm a little, but we have to extend the range either into The Alsace or Italy.

Told you you it would not be long until you would go back
