This thread is getting neglected, time to bring it back to the top.

I was looking for something to enter in a competition about "reflection".
Not a good picture as I was hoping the owner of this new Bentley wouldn't see me peering into the glossy black paint, trying to line up the car behind, without getting myself in the frame as well.

I called it "Market Reflection - Riches to Rags".

I have never had much success taking shots of the moon. Recently there was a good opportunity, so I fitted an old Tamron 500mm mirror lens and doubler to the D300, which should be the equivalent of 1500mm ??? Should have used a remote release to get it a little sharper. The image isn't cropped, just resized.

KMoore-

I like reflections too. When I shot this photo of the wife eating ice cream, I did not plan on the reflection of my daughter and myself. I only saw it on the computer, when we got home.

I also like seeing repeating patterns-

Out in the real Utah desert today, along with 50 mph winds sandblasting everything.

went for a lil ride yesterday... 'twas cold but fun!

That's the look some of the pelicanos can enjoy when they go the "goat trail" route in April...

An update on the moon shot.

I have been chatting with Steve Carlton overnight (for me anyway). Result.... this is Steve's tweaked version. Better definition and sharper. I have to put more effort into learning about sharpening.

Thanks Steve.

It was trying boss...

Kmoore. I've read that the day before the full moon is the time to do it for best results. Which is tonight. Unless it's already morning there... Were you using a tripod? MLU, etc. etc...

Interesting. It has been overcast and raining here, and will be all this week, so no opportunities. I will check on the cycles and have another attempt the day before the next full moon, with better preparation.

I used a tripod, shutter delay timer, mirror not locked up.

Craig, could be my imagination, your colors seemed to have changed (a little less saturation/vivid). Is it just me, the new camera, changed settings, post editing? I really like all you work, but you seem to have have taken a step to another level recently.

In my mind, because the Bentley is sharper and in the foreground, I see that as the primary focus of the piece, with the softer reflection of the Hyundai as the afterthought. Which, to me, says more "Rags to Riches" than "Riches to Rags". The Bentley is real, the Hyundai could very well be a mirage.

That's just my thought, though. It's also why I don't go to art gallery openings, because I usually miss the point of an artist's piece, and would rather avoid the confrontation and be able to enjoy it for what it says to ME...

As far as reflections, I took a shot of myself taking a picture in the left mirror of my S last August, and I think I posted it when I got home from that trip, so I won't re-post. I'll have to look through some of my other pictures to see if there is anything worth posting (doubtful, unfortunately).

1st hole at Tilden Park Golf Course yesterday. We got twilight rates at 12:50pm, which is nice...

:) Good point. It was a play on the current economic climate, so I guess if you were a late model Bentley owner, faced with the unfortunate reality of downsizing to the Hyundai... the Bentley would be much more in focus, through tear moistened eyes though. Not that there is anything wrong with the Hyundais, to own one might be an indicator of affluence in the near future, if the predictions of some are correct. :(

I often miss the point too, but that is what makes art so interesting. I like the Gary Larson Far Side cartoons and see lots of funny things that my friends just don't get. In fact most of my friends don't see anything funny in them. In one of his books, Larson admits that that he couldn't see any humour in some of his cartoons.

Sometimes there is more to it than meets the eye

Kev, maybe you could use a mirror. Puddles are good too - a reflection of a homeless person under a sky scraper in Sydney might be a riches to rags type thing, or someone outside the casino looking a little worse for wear (in your rear view mirror) anyway - just some prompts for yah :) good luck

Hey Stevo, nice golf pic - did you play with the usual suspects? how'd yee go?

Steve Carlton 03-10-2009 06:49 AM

Thanks, Jon. Just played with one of the guys from last time. Weather couldn't have been better. Course was soggy in places, but uncrowded. Played fair- for me.

I live under the airline equivalent of I-80, the main flight corridor from NYC to Denver/SLC/SFO. Chicago bound and departing aircraft are too low to produce contrails, all others work nicely. From my back deck I can see the NYC to Seattle corridor up on the northern horizon, and the NYC to LA/San Diego corridor on my southern horizon.

Going to work a few days ago I caught this early morning shot.

Here is what we have to do in the frozen north to ride for nearly six months of the year. A buddy's garage converted to a winter trials course.

Enjoying a Wheely in the dirt...

Riding in a Garage is what I'd call dedicated!

Went woods riding today...lots of fun and I'm starting to enjoy wheelies. We made movies using the digital camera to observe technique...or mostly the lack of it on my part. :D

Riding Buddy Scott is much better on his KTM 200...glad I got a good example to follow.
