"American Queen" passing through Lock & Dam 15 heading up stream on the Mississippi River. Shot from Davenport, Iowa, that is the Rock Island Arsenal in the back ground. They have webcams that look down on the lock, here: River Cam (Locks and Dam 15) and here Eagle Cam (Locks and Dam 15).

Shot from the parking lot at work. The smoke stacks have hydraulic cylinders on them to lay them down for passage under bridges.

Yeah, the Quad Cities is a nice area, I like it, however I was out there in January, when it was -5*F. Brrrr, I had to buy warmer clothes.

Moybin, what are you doing here???

And I got a notification that it's your birthday?
Happy Birthday!

By the way, Lock & Dam #14 has a huge bald eagle population, many serious wildlife photographers spend time there...
I think it's easier access for them or something. I even talked my sister into driving over there last year.

HERE IS THE ANSWER:
There have been many many great Bald Eagle Photos which have been taken at Lock and Dam 14 near Le Claire, IA. There are many super areas in the country to view and photograph Bald Eagles, but what is so special about this Lock and Dam?

All 29 dams offer great fishing for the eagles, however, most of the Lock and Dams have very long distances to see and to photograph the active eagles. Lock and Dam 14 is one of very few that offer close photography of Bald Eagles with unobstructed views.

When the Great Lake Region becomes snow covered and the streams / rivers frozen, the eagles begin to migrate south in search of food. This migration generally begins mid December through the third week or so of February.

For photographers, LD 14 offers a large public parking lot, restrooms, handicapped facilities, a long board walk to set up tripods - etc., and a very grand view of eagles perched in the trees around the area and fishing under the dams, which at times, are almost in hands reach. With some patience, some super shots can be taken with as little as a 200mm lens. Generally, a 300 to 800mm lens is used by many photogs. Heck, people on the boardwalk are taking photos with their iPhones among the thousand dollar set-ups.

For the Bald Eagles, the river offers great Gizzard Shad fishing. Trees are located around the area, which saves calories while allowing the eagles to peer into the waters. Just next to the parking lot, there is a Bald Eagle Sanctuary where the eagles can rest without people disturbing them. Eagles are scavengers. When there is a snow covering the ground, this forces the eagles to fish the river even more.

Doing okay, more gray hair, more grand kids!
The section of the Mississippi River from about Clinton IA (just below L&D 13) down river to about Burlington IA is the stretch that is the end of solid ice cover in winter, depending on severity of said winter. So the "snow birds" who winter over only migrate to the edge of the ice to fish.

From Princeton IA down to Riverdale IA on the Iowa side Hwy 67 runs just yards from the water, there are numerous sand bar islands with trees as well as a rise of 50 to 100 feet just yards back from the river. All conditions that the eagles prefer.

We also have year-around birds, Alcoa Aluminum in Riverdale hosts an eagle cam at a nest maintained by a mated pair of year around birds. Last few years they have raised a half dozen eaglets or so. Alcoa Eaglecam - Bald Eagle Camera at Davenport Works - #alcoaeaglecam

In the last ten years or so we have also gone from no white pelicans to some passing through headed north in the spring to a couple hundred hanging around all summer. They are really tough on the duckling population and most waterfowl guys would like to blow them away (the pelicans).

And I do enjoy how my little thread just keeps going. Some beautiful shots here of things and places I will never see. Have remained a fairly constat lurker.

No it isn't ....would have to have a mountain address to license this beast. The owner lives up in Gilpin County and thus has no requirement to have it smogged. 520 hp in a 2200 lb chassis...basically has headers with open exhaust. Says he hasn't been hassled by the polo....but nearly blew out my eardrums getting tunnel shots...

I used the pole clamp mount to hang the camera from the right luggage mount rail for the low undercarriage shots..

And finally, put one of the sticky mounts on the left front fork reflector. This mount gave the stable image of the front wheel....

In all cases when using the suction cup, make sure the surface is clean and relatively flat, otherwise you run the risk of it falling off (learned the hard way with my last GoPro which fell off in some unknown location out in the boondocks...lost and gone forever.

Thanks Brock…got me playing now!
