Hi Steve
Since you have a direct link and always are nice enough to let us know whats going on at San Jose BMW do you know what went wrong with the R1200S Moto-ST engine, leading until it went kaputt. Some people, including myself for sure would like to knwow just out of curiosity if it was something big or small. If you already posted I apologize but hopefully you are nice enough to do it again...;-)Thanks! Dean answered the same question on his website:
"Yes we know exactly what it was and is easily fixed, an incorrect factory spec. I had best not go into it further in an open forum however. Won't happen again. I'll tell you when I see you one of these days."

I know very well what happened and it was tuner induced, and in no way related to a inherent engine design flaw, inferior part, or system failure.........as some of the "consistent nay-sayers" would so ardently hope was the case. Sorry, but the R12S is the real thing and it's future is very bright.

Sounds like their (BMW Motorad's) QS9000 program broke down. The real problem with all these computer-based control systems. One fly-phart in the paperwork and the whole thing stumbles and pukes, be it a misplaced decimal point, using the wrong units (inches vs. mm) or misplaced revisions and updates (Oh, that's right, we did away with that in Rev. B).

Guys, what happened to the SJBMW bike will not happen to your bike. The engine was completely disassembled and re assembled, a factory spec in the re assy was incorrect. The published to dealers factory spec was followed to the letter, subsequently the spec has been changed. When assyed at the factory it is done to the proper spec. You can go as far as to pull the heads, cylinders and pistons and still not get into the area that we are talking about.
Perhaps something else, this is racing with the big boys after all, but for sure what happened at Daytona won't happen again. To repeate, it is not a problem on any of your bikes.

OK, it wasn't an inherent problem in the bike but it's still a secret?

Tricks that tuners use, especially good tuners, should not be made public. The racers edge is just that. Mums the word on what has been done to a engine and what has not..........as it should be.

...funny though, how last year it was supposedly completely stock and ran the others into the ground... and this season, the "Experts" start fiddling around with it and - voila - the very first race the bike gives up.... interesting progression!

Yea, like the accolades about it being a great bike in its own right. Can hold up with the best of them. And as soon as thats said the owners around here want a different ratio rear-end. I think more naysayers and less hypocrites around here would be an improvement.

Good point signit98..............note that the R12S bikes that were not "fiddled with" as you put it..............did finish and place well. Still.......improvements can and will be made. Not to worry, the boys at SJBMW will make amends and when they do........its back to the trophy stand for them. Chris may have slipped a bit this time but his traction will return.
