I should be able to get to the shop middle of this week to install my Motoyoyo clamps.

Jony,

Take it from a survivor, do what the doc's (and the Boss) want you to do. In June of '98 during my 8th angioplasty I had a total arrest, defib would not jump start a rhythm, so they did CPR for an hour, then a new surgical team took over. I was given a 50% chance of surviving that emergency 5 way bypass, but 10 years later (and after an early retirement!) I am still kickin' it and kickin' back. And yes, I did exactly what the doc's told me....

Take Care! Bill J

Wow.... Bill J. you did dodge a bullet. Bill, just currious... do you live a perfect lifestyle now after 10 years or have you slipped a little? There is alot we still don`t know about heart health. I just read a article that said 1/2 the people that had a heart attacks had normal levels of cholesterol. Triglycerides I have heard play a large part.

Lane,

Yeah, it was a large caliber bullet! They did say I had a 90% chance of brain damage due to the duration of CPR and emergency surgery...so I didn't completely dodge that bullet! LOL

My problem was mostly the result of cholesterol/tryglicerides that sort of snuck up on me. Prior to my first heart problem I'd spent years in the fire service with annual exams that always came back with a clean "Bill" of health. But, I decided to make a career change in my late 30's, and the result was no more mandatory annual exams. My cardiologist says that many people (men and women) go through the first part of their life with no blood lipid problems, then in their early 40's (men) or 50's (women) the liver undergoes a genetically controlled change and quits effectively screening for the nasty stuff.

I had 4 angioplasties in 18 months, which also caused inflammatory reactions in my immune system. This is more well understood these days then it was in the early 90's. Biggest factor in my lifestyle change was early retirement. Had an EXTREMELY stressful job, eventually 4 people were hired to fill my shoes...! So, I get a moderate bit of exercise, watch what I eat, take a "cocktail" of meds to control the lipid profile and help my heart work a bit more smoothly. Have constant angina due to the half dollar size scar tissue on the left side of my heart, but I've learned to live with it pretty well.

Big lesson for other people is to be aware of metabolic changes in their early 40's/50's. This is one part of the equation that I believe is just not talked about enough, or loudly enough, in the health care industry. I had "perfect" cholesterol and a strong heart until Dec 7th, 1989. Avoiding that first heart episode is critical to avoiding the systemic inflammation issue for those with potential for athersclerosis. Helps to know family history, I found out 10 years ago that I had two half-brothers that died of heart disease at ages of 29 and 38!

So the direct answer to your question? No, I don't lead a perfect lifestyle, but DO follow my cardio doc's advice perfectly. My doc is semi-retired, he held the patents for many of the devices used for angioplasty and sold the rights a few years ago...now THAT is a retirement plan! I'm very fortunate to have him on my "team".

Take Care! BJ

Well, kaka...reading the above just set me back about a week. Seriously, though, good info and something I had not heard before.
I'm trying to take it easy but it's hard. Guess I'll try harder.
I'm gonna let my wife do all the work the next few times

Jony,
Didn't mean to discourage, but just trying to put a little useful information out there. My coronary artery disease was quite a bit more persistent than the "average". And when I first started having the procedures it was before the use of stents, and one of the initial blockages kept coming back. By the 4th time around they had a newly FDA approved "roto-rooter" type device which finally solved that particular problem.

Perhaps one mistake I made was taking on a new job after my situation had stabilized. I took the job of Assistant Fire Marshal in Bellevue, and had full oversight and final approval of all new construction, subdivisions, preliminary design reviews, etc, etc, etc..... About a year into that position, my boss (a GREAT guy) died of an aortic aneueryism, it took 17 months to re-fill his position. That double duty didn't do me any good. After my medical retirement they also hired a registered Fire Protection engineer, a certified fire sprinkler designer, a certified fire alarm installer, and one guy just to ride herd on the permits. Did all of that work by myself for about 6 years. In retrospect it's sort of a wonder that the damn job DIDN'T kill me.

But the main point is,,, don't let it get you down. I had very severe heart disease and at times had no expectation of being around for long. My doc is not only persistent, but he's a cancer survivor too, so when he told me to not worry I believed him. And he was right! One perspective I have is that this Saturday is the 19th birthday of my second life....

So, be careful and follow the doc's advice...they've made a lot of progress in handling this condition, and we live in one of the best places in the world.

Take Care...!

Bill J

PS. I sent you a PM some time ago about something else, if you see it, please ignore my questions. I solved the problem...thanks!

Bill, thanks for your time on this very serious matter. Jony, thanks for coming forward. I am guilty of maintaining my motorcycles and cars alot better than myself. I`m 42 and have elavated levels of chol. and trig. I work out and run a little but need to do better. I also like having a drink or 3 or 4 every night... Either after the gym or after a business trip and then a lot on the weekends... we are very social and have no kids. lol. I have started eating better though. I am going to lose about 15 pounds(now at 200- 5`10) and get a check up to see where I stand. I wish someone could mark this thread as a mandatory read.

Thanks,
Lane

Lane, you're most welcome, I do have plenty of time (well, with exception of when we have a house full of holiday guests for 9 days! lol) and I'm happy to share my experience. Staying active is important, and taking the right kind of meds to control blood lipids is even more critical IMHO. I still imbibe (really like a wee dram of good Single Malt or Wild Turkey Rye now and then) but have cut down consumption significantly. Both my doc's "encourage" to some degree a little alcohol in my diet...hmm, maybe THAT'S why I like my docs so much!

Take care and enjoy the Holiday Season!

Cheers! Bill J
