The BMW Luxury Touring site displays the IP # for everyone that posts. Never seen that done before. OK you computer geeks, should I be concerned?

Nope,
That is like complaining because your address is on your mail at the house. [edit] If you were to monitor the traffic hitting your IP address issued to you by your ISP, most likely at your SOHO router/firewall, you would see that it is under attack continuously. I used to have a job where I monitored logs and instituted blocks based on scans and attacks. This was back in 2000/2001 when IA and security devices were not as safisticated as they are today. Anyway it is amazing how much malicious traiffic is on the internet continuously probing IPs looking for holes. If you don't use some type of firewall at the house, I suggest you get one. My neighbor used to just plug is computer directly into the cable modem, and he ran no firewall. He was always having troubles until I got him on the right path. At the time I had a Free BSD server I was using as a router firewall, and I saw the same stuff at home that I saw at work, so it was not just attacks on the DOD, it is internet wide. I guess haveing your IP in the post could allow someone to get a better idea on where a poster is geographically located, and could possibly make it easier for someone to try to attack them. But my thinking is your should be prepared for an attack anyways.

on the checkout page of client shopping carts, i display the IP number.
it's pulled from their own computer. they're the only one that sees it. if you don't have a firewall, you're a fool. i finally turned off the file that logged people sniffing around my IP. the file got too big. once did a nice clean, cold build of a computer in the garage, was having problems with the nic card, so i plugged it directly to the cable modem took all of about 3 seconds for it to get attacked, hacked and zombied. wasn't amused, but at least i found out that the card wasn't the problem. apparently, it worked just fine. besides, have you ever tried to reverse-directory an IP number down to the user? best o' luck....

Is there any way to wholesale change the IP shown? I think that would a great way to protect attacks, even if behind a firewall. I am behind one, and my IP address shows on some forums and such. I think being able to change this now and then would be great.

Try to access the forum through a proxy, that should work.

If you are running Internet Explorer you open the tools menu, under internet options, connections, LAN settings you see a place to put an IP address and a port for a proxy. After you find a proxy you like, put the info in there and you then surf the web through that proxy. There are lots of them because people like to do things on the internet anonymously. Suppose your employer has a device that limits your ability to surf sports sites, or ebay during the day. Some people configure their browser to use a proxy to get around this. Of course any security guy worth his pay will filter out the knows proxies also. Another use would be to configure a european IP (RIPE) so you can watch the SBK races on the internet, instead of waiting for the crappy speed coverage. HTH.

Thanks. The http://www.ninjacloak.com link let me get to a site I could not, without it. So, I tried to integrate http://www.ninjacloak.com into Internet Explorer but cannot make it work, to test out. Any other suggestions for a proxy port?

You just need to Google web proxies and maybe you can find one. I don't generally use a them. I am sure someone here can share an IP and port with you. Or Google anonymous web surfing and perhaps you can find something. Perhaps with a good list of proxies, or a random proxy we could have done a better job at helping Eff win the contest.
