i guess i'm a little confused.
maybe this went sideways when ralf called out shreddr about killing that buzzard. i'm with ralf on that one...those who ride around here know to tip-toe around buzzards, because they're poor flyers, slow to take off, slow to maneuver and usually fly at you, rather than away. 50 mph isn't slow. it wasn't an accident. it was killed due to ignorance. just my opinion, based on experience. i also noticed that a lot of ralf bashers are fairly new guys, most of which haven't met or don't know ralf. yea, he's caustic at times, yep, he's blunt. and his english as a second language often doesn't convey the fact that he's being sarcastic when he writes. ralf doesn't hold back, which i find refreshing. you always know where he stands. he'll feed you, house you, help you with your bike and loan you whatever part/gear you need at the time. even if he doesn't like you. sure, he might tell you that you're an a-hole for getting yourself into a problem and he'll laugh at you while he pulls you out of a mineshaft to save you butt. i've been helping him the last few months, to get him ready for his alaska ride. the biggest surprise to me: he actually knows what he's getting into. he knows he'll fall many times, he knows he'll probably get hurt more than once, he knows it will be at times both a miserable and wonderful trip. on thursday morning he's dropping his son off at school and heading out on a 3 month, 14,000 mile ride. alone. he's stopping to visit friends along the way, but for the most part, it's a trip that consists of riding all day, sleeping at trailside and grabbing a shower and cooked meal every 4-5 days. of course, that's no reason to like ralf. some who don't know him think he's a dick. some who DO know him think he's a dick. sometimes i think he's a dick. sometimes he (refreshingly) agrees he's being a dick. that's ralf. if you want to go to a forum where somebody doesn't tick you off...give up now. my mother complains about her Amish Quilting BBS and all the bickering and politics that goes on in there.....so best of luck finding a non-confrontational place to play. i'm looking forward to following his alaska ride, especially knowing his personality and some of his background. eons ago i climbed the matterhorn (that rock you see on all Paramount studio productions). turns out ralf has done it too. we compared notes and agreed that although it looks tough, it wasn't that big of a challenge. there's a spot nearby that we both knew about, horne glacier, that's way harder. i think he'll do fine. and honestly, if i were making that trip, there isn't anyone else on this board that i would consider going with. he'll take in the good and bad parts of an experience like that, while we're down here spinning around in circles. sure, i'd have to put up with ralf for three months, might have to brake check him on occasion, and in return he'd probably give you crap if you sniveled about an annoying little thing like a broke bone. but you know he wouldn't quit. while we're down here, occasionally frightened by having to suddenly zig to avoid hitting a zagging house cat, he'll be up there doing the same thing with.....a moose. or a bear. or a pistol packing local that finds ralf (gasp!) to be unacceptably outspoken. on second thought, now that he's leaving on a trip that i'll probably never get to take, forget all the semi-nice things i've said. i've changed my mind about ralf. i will be offering the following image on t-shirts, coffee cups, mouse pads and limited edition collector plates. you guys will have first crack at a pelican group buy. (tattoos exempt from group buy offers) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1243179272.jpg |
I'm looking forward to meeting Ralph when he heads this way. (north that is).

ralph, you're a freakin' dick.
Since I'M just as big a dick, I inherently know when someone else is. dickness isn't unique but it IS rare, as we both illustrate when blended with brilliance. If you make it past Tacoma, PM me and I'll buy you a local microbrew. |
