Can anyone out there assist me with details of manufacturers/retailers of non carbon fibre huggers please. As much as I like the look of carbon fibre - I can't afford it and would be quite happy to keep the keyrap off the underside with a plastic item. The bike is standard - no aftermarket exhausts etc (yet).

You could try Tom Byrne BMW at St Peters but i dont like your chances. The phone number is 9557 1610 - ask for Mark Burdken. He knows a few contacts - short of that you could try a wreckers for an old ZXR 750 rear Hug. I think the first models - had a 170 section rear, perhaps you may be able to butcher it enough to fit.

Try this guy-- doesn't list BMW, so you will probably have to modify something...

don't see it costing less than $100 US. Ilmberger is $225? My advice is just get it and be done with it... If your modified hugger falls off and gets caught in your wheel, you will wish you had..

Before you get excited about a hugger check its coverage. My wife's Monster has a nice looking hugger but if you extend a tangent line from the tire circumference to the back edge of the hugger that is the cut off point. Hers still throws a lot of junk under the seat and then it falls back down on top of the hugger. I decided to let the s--t fly and just made a guard for the shock. I used a piece of Lexan that runs from the front lip of the under seat plastic tray to the bottom of the shock. It was heated and bent at the top to connect to the lip and then hangs vertically until it lightly rubs against the stock too small plastic shock guard. Since it is clear you don't see it until it gets dirty and it keeps all the junk of the shock. Heat gun-$20, Lexan-$10, my time-priceless.

Pyramid offers a plastic hugger for the BMW R1100S. It is just a shade over $100 USD. I can't remember who sells them.

RBManns suggestion makes a lot of sense . Steer away from trying to fashion a rear hugger in favour of the 'thing' I got thru BM (cost me an arm & a leg) admittedly it is C F , but only protects rear shocker . Mounts to lower screw holes at base of OEM Rear Shock, maitains profile of front of back tyre . Underseat and mufflers still get gunk on them but nothing gets thrown toward shockie or back of Motor . Would be an easy template .

Do the plastic - fabricating thing OR if you have any mates into boats , con a bit of Fibre glass gear and go crazy . Nuttin to lose .

Front guard - seen a few of the Melb BM Club guys simply rivet lower extension pieces to existing in either plastic or rubber to give front of motor more protection .Looks O.K . I went full CF front guard (Canyon Carbon) expensive but should be indistructable .

Those of you who mispent their youth on dirt bikes will no doubt recall the Preston Petty plastic injected molded fenders that fit most all dirt bikes and were de rigueur on the motocross track. The fenders where relatively cheap and absolutely indestructable. I had a set on my Bultaco 125 Pursang. It's too bad ol' Preston does not make a Hugger for the S.

I have had an NWS non carbon hugger from day one (dealer fitted it for me before it rolled a wheel).

I couldn't see the point of carbon fibre or justify the cost. If you want light weight, go to the toilet before riding.

The cost was under £90. After 6000 miles the underneath is as good as new. It fixes securely onto the swingarm/shaft and below the shock. Far more stable and safe than the caliper option.

An excellent piece of kit.
