Odometer rest/roll-back on used odo

Hello.

I recently bought 2004 R1100SA from the US (I am in Canada). I happened to find an inexpensive used speedometer/odometer in Km/H from an i-abs bike. I'd like to buy it and swap over. I would guess the unit is designed to take in the same signal, so it would display correctly, but the odometer would need to be rolled back (or rolled over) to be in-line with my bike. Is such a thing possible?

Might be cheaper, easier and look cooler to replace the face with the metric white face speedo and tachometer. A search of the froum should turn up a link. PP member Mr Feldman I think it is might have a pointer too.

Federal law prohibits tampering with odometers. But for our purposes that's irrelevant. I'd suspect it's not very easy to do.

I can only speak from a vehicle experience when I had my speedometer odometer cluster replaced in an older Jeep I had. The dealer did not change the new unit to reflect correct mileage, but rather wrote it up as a service record noting the change, old odometer mileage, and new odometer install date. If they could have done it, why would they not simply adjust the new odometer to the correct mileage?

I understand that the speedometer gets a signal from the ABS sensor, so I would guess no cable is used. Pure speculation, but perhaps some sort of pulsed signal is used and the motor to drive the odometer is in the instrument itself? But the how would I go backward? Doesn't sound promising...

If you roll it forward until it loops, it will effectively roll it backward

However, it is my understanding that odo replacement have to be declared to your local DOT or registration office, and that takes a significant toll on the resale value. As said previously, keep the original odo and just replace the speedo writting.
