A Bit of a Rant

So I picked up my R12S yesterday after having the Ohlins rebuilt and have the suspension set up for me. Looking forward to my first ride tomorrow, going to be 16C and sunny, but have run into a bit of an issue.

Battery, new Shorei totally dead. Would not even fire up the screen to check mileage.

Left rear turn signal snapped off. (Don't know when this happened but a true PITA) It's one of those fancy Hornig jobbies that I replaced last year.

Exhaust seems loose. The can slides back and forth about 1 1/2 inches each way quite easily. So about three inches total side to side. I have never taken the exhaust off, but don't remember it being that easy to move when I washed the bike.

He mentioned they removed the rear sub frame to get at the shock.

The battery is now charged, I can bodge something for the turn signal but the exhaust has me a bit concerned. How much movement should there be? Should I be able to slide it back and forth? That just doesn't seem right. I have pulled the rear tupperware off and noticed a bolt that had not been tightened so I guess I will be going over their work instead of riding tomorrow.

As far as I recall before swapping out my OEM exhaust for the Ti the exhaust was pretty firm. Maybe a little play from the rear rubber bushings but nothing you could wiggle.

Thanks, I will take the darn thing off and see what was installed wrong. Those bolts are a bit of a pig to remove.

Turn signal. I used a zip tie on the 11s. Worked well ...Just a thought.

So what are you saying? Are you ranting about the repair shop?

The exhaust should be tight.

The battery could have just discharged. They do that.

They might have broken off the turn signal and not even known it. Or, they did know it...

I didn't think you had to remove the rear sub-frame to get to the shock? Maybe you do...

No need to remove the rear subframe to remove the shock, but the rear section of exhaust might need to come out. I can't remember right now.

Give the battery a charge and see what happens.

Next time, remove shocks yourself if you can and hand them the suspension parts.

Sounds like the work of this shop is suspect??

I just deleted three paragraphs of whining - it has been a bad week.

All reviews I have read is that the shop is excellent. I would say this is an aberration and likely the result of unfamiliarity with the model.

Nothing that cannot be fixed - I have a couple of ideas.

So all's well with the world. All it took was a self tapping screw, a cotter pin and a couple of gobs of two part epoxy.

I am off to pop the cap on a cold one and lounge in the sun.

Reference the battery, here's an entry in my maintenance record for my R1200S which I should NEVER have sold.

"30Aug11. 35,464 miles. Replaced Shorai 14A1 with an LFX18A1-BS12. The 14A1 died and retailer said that the 18 was really the battery for this bike so they exchanged it free of charge, to include FedEx."
