Need input on windscreens
I've searched and found threads on the topic, but didn't find exactly what I'm looking for...
Despite my satisfaction with my old Schuberth C1, I couldn't pass up a new SR1 when it went on clearance for 50% off. At first I thought it was insanely loud (even though it's advertised as super quiet for what it is), but a quick spin on my naked K75 confirmed the helmet is fine. It's where the wind gets cut off on what i believe to be the oem sport windscreen on the R11s (image for reference below). I don't want a big touring screen, I'm simply looking to move the air further down towards my chest where right now it gets cut off right at my chin (I'm 5'11") and the brunt of the turbulence is flowing right into the bottom of the front of my helmet. I'm looking at the CeeCeeBailey's 12" "replica edition" and the MRA SpoilerScreen 13". They differ greatly in shape, so anyone with experience with either -- I'd love to hear your thoughts. ![]()

There are a few brands of wind deflectors that you glue on the windscreen that help reduce turbulance.
This is what I use... ![]()

It looks like you have the OEM touring screen. I put a Laminar Lip on one but it did not help much. I have used two different 12" screens and they were much better. However they are no longer available.

I had the stock screen on mine for years and wore ear plugs so noise wasn't an issue. Recently switched to the lower BMW sport screen that has been in my attic, and it is much quieter, though not as much protection from the elements and rain.

I use a laminar lip on the tall factory screen; it works as it brings the flow of air higher. Caveat? It will stress crack your bolt mount holes when you travel at high speed. If you use anti vibration washers from the get go this may not happen. I purchased the low screen but have not used it as yet. I have a Laminar Lip for that one as well. I intend to try it next summer.

I agree, the stock screen is about 32 mm and the "winter" screen 45 mm high, tried it once and found too much buffeting. It's wrapped up in the shed.

I have the same problem with the stock touring screen like yours - air dumped just at the chin. The MRA 13" works much better for me, although with a little less protection. For reference I'm 5'8". No experience with Cee Bailey screens.

+1 on the foam ear plugs.
I had experienced a few weeks of tinnitus about 2yrs ago. I think it was a combination of a way too loud rock show and stress. Thank god it went away. I ride with ear plugs anytime I'm going out for more than just a short ride. I have a stock windscreen on my R1200s, and I really like where the air hits me (same with a stock screen on the R1100s). a big box at homedepot has lasted me 3yrs now.

Thanks for the input everyone. I always ride with earbuds, but even with those in, I can tell the wind noise with the SR1 is significantly louder than with my C1. I guess the shape of the older modular helmet masked the issue that is now very apparent with a newer more aerodynamic helmet.
I decided against both I listed above in favor of the 7jurock windscreen in dark gray. It was the shortest i could find as I'm curious to see what happens when moving the air flow a good bit lower. If this doesn't work, I'll try out the slighter taller windscreen from National Cycle as the shape advertises to move the wind not only down from the stock touring screen but also out around the rider. The only reason i held off was because it's not much shorter than what I have currently.

That 7jurock is very similar to the MRA screen, which gives me clean helmet air. The ZTechnik screen is 15+ inches, which may not help you much. And helmets do make a big difference. My quietest clean-air helmet is my noisiest one with the OE touring screen.

I went with the 7jurock and am quite pleased with it. I opted for the light gray as it is thicker (3/16) versus the dark gray (1/8). I wanted the option of using a deflector and thought the thicker material would be better.

I'm not a big fan of listening to music when I ride, to distracting, but I would never wear regular ear buds. I would assume you have to turn the volume up too loud to actually be able to hear then, thus creating more hearing damage in the long run.

I think some of the problem I experience is because of my modular helmet. My Shoei Neotec is not a quite helmet. May be after bonus season at work, I'll spring for a new one. Probably go full face just to see if the Sena will perform better.

I got the Z-Technik Touring screen and don't know or much care if it throws the air out to the side. It still puts a stream of choppy air onto my helmet, presently a Shoei X-11, but Hear-Os earplugs and crouching makes it manageable. I've bought the under-triple clamp bars for a lower position but have not yet put them on.
I got a Schuberth C3 Pro, s'posedly the quietest helmet made. Well, maybe for clean air. The combination of the Z-Technik screen and the C3 Pro is to my ears horrible, like a drum roll, even at 35 mph. Open the chin vent and it's a roar. It's very quiet sitting still, blocking out more ambient sound than any hat I've tried, which is not what I want, so it's for sale. Where is that elusive helmet that can deal with air thrown at it from a windscreen, which is what at least half of most riders experience? Failing that, where is the windshield that sends that trash air just a couple inches higher, without being a barn door? Every combination of rider, position, windscreen, helmet and noise tolerance is unique. If anyone has an extra windshield that they would like to trade temporarily for my Z-Technik to try it out, I would like to try something different for just the price of shipping without having to buy and return a screen. I ride year 'round so can't go without a screen for more than a day or two, but if that plan sounds at all attractive, PM me. |

I have a short shield and maybe a tall. No shipping involved, I am close by in Kenmore. I am around tomorrow, Friday but then gone until the 10/31.

What exactly is it you don't like? Speakers not loud enough? Doesn't work nearly as well as earplugs? My Sena will be in today and plan to try it out with both my full face and modular helmets. I'd be happy to send you honest feedback on the experience. Quote:

Vanity-wise, I think the one you have on it now looks best and the Sport/7jurock/MRC short screens second best. If I wanted the barn door effect I'd ride an RT (which would be nice in bad weather).

I had to turn the volume up too loud to be able to hear it over the "normal" ride noise. As I wrote earlier, I had tinnitus for a few months and I will do anything not to get that back.
I tried the foam spaces to move the speakers closer to my ears (that's what my brother did), but I didn't like them pushing on my ears, and it was still too loud in my opinion. I like riding with just the engine noise. The "quite" experience of riding a motorcycle with just my thoughts is what hooked me 30yrs ago. I guess I shouldn't have messed with that.
